I wouldn't count on it if McPhee is left in charge. He's too preoccupied with hoarding prospects and winning trades, and hates overpaying in FA. As a result he ends up overpaying role players rather than star players since overpay on a 3 million dollar contract is easier on the eyes than ovepay on a 7 million dollar contract. One dollar bills in strip clubs syndrome. This also leads him to letting every player who has value walk rather than trade them at value/below value. I wish we had a GM who wasn't such a slave to basic psychological tricks.
I'd be for purging everyone except Ovechkin, Backstrom, Alzner, Carlson, Orlov and one of the goalies. Then using the cap space/picks/our lottery pick/UFA class to finally put together a flawless contending team next year and roll with it.
The thing that's good for the caps honestly is that they can dig themselves out of the hole much more easily than a team like Calgary. Hopefully the GM will finally think outside the box and get out of his comfort zone because for the caps it wouldn't be hard to put a contender up in a short time
Does it matter why? He's a grown man and a paid professional. There's really no justification in my book unless he's injured.
It doesn't matter if there's "justification" for it or not. Ovechkin is an instrument. A tool. Just like every player on the ice. You can either ***** about what you expect from paid professionals (and as a result keep running guys out on rails every year except teh grindersz), or acknowledge them for what they are and put them in a position to succeed, warts and all. You know, like how the Kings turned Jeff Carter from quitter of the century into a crucial cup winning piece.
I don't care about Ovechkin being the least professional player in the world (not that he is but to make a point). It doesn't ****ing matter. I just care about getting a cup. **** the regular season with a rake. You want professionals go watch the apprentice. In the right environment Ovechkin is a very important playoff player. And we keep flaming out in the second round and blaming it on Ovechkin and Backstrom not being Conn Smythe level while the rest of our roster is a pile of putrid crap that gets methodically dismembered by any team with an ounce of direction in their roster.
