Didn't he just say that he was in the East to scout some college players?

When teams don`t have any regular season games against those out of conference, there is a bit of smoke there.

He's not going to come out and say he is working on a trade, That would hurt his lockeroom.

Can you imagine if they won the cup with all three splitting time equally?

I bet people would still discredit Luongo and Lundqvist for not carrying a team to the Cup.

I remember when Darryl Sutter was the Flames GM he said the same thing when he was out East (he was discussing Tanguay trades) , it's a standard response from GMs to deflect attention away from trade rumors.

Lamerello obviously highly values strong goaltending. He could be tryiing to find the replacement for Brodeur longterm. Thats my only reasonable guess.

It would have to be Schneider though because of the new cap circumvention rule in the CBA. If they got Lu and both he and Kovalchuk retired with 2 or 3 years left on their deals the devils would have a massive dead space on their cap.

I hate to kick a dead horse, but you do realize that it will be approx. $2 mil per year, and by 2020, I reckon the cap will be up to about $85-$90 mil.

Not the biggest deal in the world.

People don't realize that Luongo's due (of his contract) is exceeded by the revenue his very presence will generate (jersey sales, merchandise, 1 nice playoff would pay off Luongo's contract, for instance).

Right, and Burke went to Sweden to sign Gustavsson.

There's no reason for Gillis to scout top eastern teams right now. There's a long way to go before we'd ever play an eastern team and plenty of playoffs to scout. He's clearly looking at players he'd be interested in trading for, most likely for Schneider not Luongo.

They went to a game at Yale on Saturday to scout/express interest in Antoine Laganiere. He's a 6'4 PPG center who participated in the Canucks prospect camp last year. Bob McKenzie is confident that someone will sign him to an NHL contract at the end of the season, so I imagine Gillis was there to reaffirm the team's interest in him and show a level of commitment by watching him play in person.

He hasn't exactly hurried back, but the story checks out.

Gillis has been showing an interest in bigger bodies lately (booth and Kassian trades). It wouldn't be a huge surprise if he offered the guy a deal. Maybe trying to replicate that magic he had with the Tanev signing.

Schneider and Larsson. Any possibility of a deal around these two?

You know how the habs sent Gomez home and kept paying him, teams can do that with Kovalchuk/Luongo at the ends of their contracts. eg

Luongo + 2nd to cap floor team for a couple of sub-900K $1m AHL cap dumps.

cap floor team send Luongo home and keeps paying him, they get to use his cap hit to get under the floor AND they get a 2nd AND they save real $. Vancouver (or team X) gives up a 2nd and takes on $0 cap hit and is free of luongos cap hit.

Why are you scouting anyone that you aren't going to met unless you make the finals?

If he's just taking in some games for fun that's cool, although I doubt that makes much sense. It's during the season with teams you most likely aren't going play all year.

Devils aren't trading for a goalie. Marty and Moose both have NTC's.

Yeah, if you listened to the interview I linked, one of the reasons (excuses) for the trip occurring now is that NCAA teams don't like having their players focused on scouts and meeting with them during the run for playoffs in their leagues.

Gillis and Gilman want to meet and speak with the kids their scouts are interested in.
