Predators 2012/13

After falling 4-3 in the Western Conference Finals to the eventual cup winner LA Kings last season, the Nashville Predators had to fill a big hole in the offseason. Top goaltender Tim Thomas left the team pursuing a career in extreme couching and barbecuing.

Since the team otherwise seemed to be in good shape, getting a good goaltender was the top priority for GM Kapfenberger during summer. He did so in acquiring Ncklas Backstrom from the Calgary Flames in exchange for goaltending prospect Oscar Dansk and a 2nd round pick in 2013. Backstrom didn't dissappoint in his first game, giving up only 2 goals while facing 29 shots against division rivals Columbus.

While the GM isn't fully satisfied with the teams salary structure at this point, the overall quality is strong and suggests another playoff run, so don't expect any big moves anytime soon, unless ways are found to reduce salaries on the 3rd D pair or a good scoring winger can be scooped up.

Why is Thomas ineligible to Play? He has not retired but decided to take a year off.

Ditto that. Shows how much I tuned out from the HFNHL in the off-season I hadn't noticed.

That said the acquisition of Backstrom keeps the Preds as strong - much to the chagrin of the rest of us Central Division teams.

I still think its the stupidest rule we have. If a player plays in 2011-12 in the NHL then they should play in 2012-13 hfnhl. We follow the NHL in everything except end of their careers. Makes no sense

I understand if someone retired before the deadline than he should be removed. However, Thomas was under Boston NHL Roster and was suspended when he did not show up for training camp. So in my opinion, he should not be removed from Nashville Roster.

No offense - but we had this conversation already - bit late to be chiming in now because Tony already made moves to cover the Thomas removal....

Predators start hot, cool off quickly

Stats-wise the Predators look fine. there's scoring, there's defense, goaltending looks good - yet there's a losing record.

The team started out strong, beatiing the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Chicago Blackhawks at home for a strong 2-0 start. The same 2 teams were scheduled for the next games - both losses. Go figure.

On top of that the Predators lost to the Detroit Red Wings 4-1 in Thomas Greiss first start of the season. So instead of erasing all question marks en route to another lengthy playoff run, the team as laid a shaky foundation and has early pressure to turn the corner.

On the positive side, goaltending has been very solid. Nicklas Backstrom sports a 92,6% save percentage and Thomas Greiss had 35 saves in the loss against the Red Wings.

There's reason to believe, the team will do better soon.

I have no doubt Tony. You've only played 3 of 29 HFNHL teams right now and we are all faced with almost exclusively inter-divisional games for the first 20. Being the Central Division and all I would be surprised if any of us came out of the first 20 games with an astounding record. My goal is to survive this phase with a .500 record.

It's not like we're the Leafs in an easy division getting to beat up on an incomplete Sabres squad, those hopeless Bruins, etc. etc. to rack up easy points

I agree, and have argued about this for years, especially with European players (seriously, NHL GMs don't have to worry that a player under contract will go to Europe, why do we?).

BUT...so long as this is the rule, we have been consistent in applying it to these situations. Any player who will not play that season is out. A player who may or may not is in. Thomas has said he will not play so he is out.

I would love to revisit this rule at some point.

it's not much fun right now... it's just weird and doesn't seem to be right (not losing against you, but how the season has gone overall)

I suspect the Wild and Sharks would agree, but for different reasons. Short sample sizes apply, but we do know this version of the sim is a little quirky.
