I'm really surprised you weren't talking about Nels Stewart

That was my initial thought as well.

Nice to see Joe get appreciation. Though he has tried to re-invent himself in recent years with a grittier go-to-net style and most times it hasn't worked. He's not a finisher. He and the Sharks haven't been using him ideally in the last few years. That 'C' on his chest hasn't helped him reach the top of his potential these days imo. As a Sharks fan watching every San Jose game (including one right NOW against Nashville; 1-1 with 2 min. remaining), I wish he would do what he used to do so well: focus more on passing and playmaking than trying to go to the net and making linemates drop back. He fans on pucks more than a Japanese geisha girl! He's a disher not a finisher, but he thinks otherwise nowadays.

He was #1 on my list, as well. I quick statistical comparison between Thornton and Stastny (first row of numbers is Vs2 scoring totals):

Joe Thornton:
102, 100, 97, 91, 84, 82, 79, 78, 76, 74, 71, 64
Hart: 4, 1, 5, 6, 9

Peter Stastny:
100, 95, 94, 87, 85, 81, 74, 71, 51
Hart: 4, 7, 12, 7

Thornton is also better defensively than Peter (to say nothing of Cowley and Stewart), though Stastny does have a single peak season in the Czech league that's not accounted for in the above (he won the Golden Stick). The only reason Joe doesn't go in the top 120 at this point is the old silliness from Boston fans about him being a playoff choker.

Do these V2 numbers account for the years Gretzky/Lemieux peaked at the same time (which would affect Stastny, not Thornton?)

They are normalized to Vs3 when there is more than a 10% difference between the #2 and #3 scorers, per my normal methodology. So yes.

edit: although, to be honest, I am thinking that the appropriate normalization would be (#3 scorer + 10%) rather than just straight #3, to avoid the irrational situation where if the #2 scorer puts up 1-2 fewer points, all of the others get a worse Vs2 score.

Stewart is better than both, but with the way our team is coming together, Nels Stewart just doesn't fit in.

Kinda suprised to see MacKay was still on the board. He'll center my 2nd unit.

A few active centers have risen a lot, but as a group, centers have fallen back to where they traditionally go in the draft. For some reason, ATD2012 had a huge premium on centers (which ended up ****ing me over) and ATD 2013 has an even bigger than usual premium on defensemen.

Well, its peer pressure! Nah, but when you see a trend, you start to think "I should get this defenseman now before he's gone"

Pm sent, though clearly not needed. If it helps, Wade Belak and Aki Berg are still available.

With the 160th pick, Yekaterinburg selects:

Sylvio Mantha!

Hold on for the next pick, one second.

Ok, the next pick may be a bit off the board, but we're not getting him in other round, and I really wanted to add his blend of speed (which we're building around), size (6'3") two way play and talent.

Mike Modano!

Jesus you guys are leaving a ton of value on the table by drafting defenseman after defenseman.

EDIT - Oh, Modano. Nice.

No I don't mean you specifically but the run on defenseman has left a lot of very good forwards dropping.

A couple in particular I would have taken over Modano but I get you like his combination of attributes.

His performance in Boston playoffs was underwhelming, (although it was a lot to ask for the kid at the time). Until he at least gets into the Finals there will always be that perception.

Yet, you will be hard pressed to finad a Bruins fan who doesn't think his trade was one of the worst ever returns for such a gifted playmaker. The Thornton/Murray connection was lethal. Murray went down hard in each succeeding season after joe was gone.

Way good pick. Being an Eastern Conference guy I really didn't see or appreciate his game much until way later in his career.
