why the leafs are so smart

i have been trying to figure out the leaf approach in not signing free agents this offseason(big names hatcher and such).I believe it's simple the leafs only have sundin and some of the young guys under contract for next season.players coming off the books include belfour, moginly, roberts etc. This will leave them with mad salary space and will help inticing players such as todd bertuzzi to toronto.

Good point.......this team does know what they are doing..........It's not like it's Harold Ballard running the show here............I wonder which one of the League's superstar Goalies becomes a free agent after this season?

Which is a good idea, sometimes due to their passion people forget that this is a business too.

It tells me the leafs will be joining the group of owners that will be seeking serious changes to the CBA.Right or wrong they will definately be part of the majority.

if the NHL changes the Restricted Free Agent age from 31 to a lower age then the Leafs will have alot of money to spend to get young guys...but if it doesnt it means that Ferguson will be pretty much signing 7-10 guys, and will probably have to pay alot.....the leafs arent the only team that have a few guys signed till the end of this season

As an Oilers fan, I'm thrilled by what appears to be a pretty hard edged Leaf organization with regard to the CBA. No one I've seen has talked about this, but Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver (plus Ottawa with their ownership now) could easily leave the Alberta teams high and dry.

There would also be some benefit in doing so (in English Canada, the Leafs are easily the most popular team overall, and still have massive fan bases in the West), but from what I've read the Leafs want a deal that makes business sense.

Good for them.
