Yes they said it was a small tear in something of which they did not know and where unsure as what direction to go with it!

If they could get something substantial for him or if he could be a piece of a package for a true top pairing D man I'd do it but I don't see either situation happening. So I'd rather keep him and continue to hope that there's no long term damage.
I meant after he comes back (if he comes back) and before the next potential injury.

It can happen the other way too. Especially to guys almost entirely reliant on their physical attributes.

Three more words: Multiple back surgeries.

You're jumping the gun here.

I remember when Darren Helm was healthy. Those were the days...

Ya I got that, but I think my point still stands, he's more valuable to the Wings than what he'd get in a trade. Even when they incorporate the risk that he'll turn into a Eric Daze he's still worth the gamble.

Also I think that risk is still relatively low.

If hes torn a ligament or capsule in his back (likely his Z disc whichis where one vertebrae articulates with another) it takes MONTHS to repair unfortunatley. Ive heard of NFL trainers using prolotherapy (injecting vitamins/glucose to cause an irritation and re-initiate the healing process and produce most collagen/connective tissue @ the injury site so its stronger than before the injury) ... I hope Helm is doing likewise as an insurance policy for the future. Hell -a little GH/IGF-1 wouldnt hurt either.

As much as a few members have been vocal about splitting Z and D, I think it's our best hope. Something has got to get Zetter going and we should have our best players with Dats, or 1 at least. Terrific to see Gus on the 2nd, but agree with the comment I'd rather Tatar instead of Miller.

Anyways too bad about Helm. I hope he can return next season. Crazy it will be 1 1/2 years since he will have played( besides the 1 game this season). I know he's extremely frustrated but keep yer head up Darren!

Definitely a bummer. His speed and hustle would be a breath of fresh air right about now.

At this point, I'm just hoping he can get his career back on track.

They should have Tatar replacing Helm right now. Tatar was quick and was making things happen when he was up here, except he has better hands then Helm.

Yeah, I was thinking that Helm might not be the same player when he comes back. Some people's bodies can't keep up with the way they play.

Hard to think of a player that doesn't have better hands than Helm

I think maybe he just skates too fast for his mind to keep up with what's happening to the puck.

I would honestly love to see a Nyquist - Franzen - Tatar line. I see a lot of potential here. A big body with a couple quick, skilled players who play with creativity and enthusiasm.

Anyone knows if the dude in my avatar is making a comeback before the playoffs? I think the team could benefit quite alot if so , he is a 'clutch player' (seriously), and always has been.

helm skated with the team today but didnt participate in drills.

Wings on the ice for practice. Helm is skating with the team, one day after Babcock said he doesn't expect him to return this season.

The pessimism of some people here knows no bounds. Helm's injury has not required back surgery, so it is likely that he will completely recover. It is simply a poor idea to rush the recovery.

Strange, but good news nonetheless. Don't think it changes the likelihood of his return this season.

I think saying Helm won't be back this season is largely based on that there's still no timeline and the season is running out of games. Not that they've found his problems more severe.
