This is the idea I'd like to see adopted.

As for the extended time..... what happens if during the extended time another penalty is called at the 6 minute mark?

If that penalty puts the team 2 men down, do you play till the end of that PP?

If the penalty goes against the team with the extra man shouldn't they play 3 on 3 till the other team gets their extra time change with the powerplay? I mean fair is fair right? Both teams deserve extra time power play.

Well, having a 10 second PP is the exact opposite. And that's why I said to extend the shootouts to five roundsójust so it wound't be more fair than playing with one less player in three rounds.

I like this idea.

What happens if the team on the PP takes a penalty themselves, and the teams just keep taking penalties (unrealistic, but still). The overtime could be extended forever.

You could have a rule that the maximum length of the OT period with added penalty time is 10 minutes.

Or you could just say that almost no one kills all penalties for long. Especially at 4-on-3. Too much ice for that.

That is one of the STUPIDEST things about soccer - and there's a lot to choose from.

yeah, in 2013, soccer officials still haven't figured out how to run a clock so everyone can see when the game actually ends.

The Sharks would have benefitted from an extra 50 seconds of power play time tonight if this rule existed. They still won in the shootout though.

It seems like there has been so many shootouts already and most teams are only 6-7 games into the season

I once loved it but now it is just becoming annoying. Yes some of them are very enteratining just like the Preds Kings tonight but its just too much. If the OT was a 10 minute 4 on 4 period there would be so many more games decided the right way.

EDIT: Funny thing about your username, I had a major brain cramp today and called Olive Garden, Arden Golive.

10 minutes of 4 on 4 needs to happen. I would be surprised if most games weren't decided in the 10 minutes, especially if either team got a power play.

I think Arden Golive sounds better anyway

If one of the teams has the lead at the end of Regulation they win the game and thats it. The other team simply ran out of time.

They already have this rule in the playoffs since there is continuous Overtime and the penalties carry over.

During Overtime, the game is still tied. I believe the team that has to kill a penalty in the closing minute of Overtime gets an unfair break in a tie game when Overtime ends before the penalty expires.
What is being proposed is to make the game longer. Instead of a 60 minute game or 65 minute game you want to say a 66 minute game but only because the game is tied.
Why would the score have anything to do with it?
If one team is down 2-1 in regulation with 28 seconds left and a penalty is taken which could have affected the outcome of the game such as a breakaway with no penalty shot called, in reality one team is getting screwed. They simply have run out of time. The 1st and second period penalties carry over but the third does not. Now only because the game is tied we all of a sudden give an advantage to one team and extend the play past OT. Didnt the time run out just like in th 2-1 game?

Now this to me is a much better idea but we still need a greater incentive to score in OT.
Perhaps a new point award system.

Penalty happens when it happens. Game ends when it ends.

Tonight the Blackhawks had 50 seconds left on the power play when Overtime ended. They lost in the shootout. This situation is happening a lot in the first 2 weeks of the season alone.

But the game isn't ending. It's going to a shootout, where they aren't penalized.

PP in OT are too much of an advantage. teams are more succesful in 4 on 3 than 5 on 4s....

What happens if during the PP the team on the PP commits a penalty??? does the game go on forever?

This question has already come up in this thread. I propose the maximum length of the OT period is 10 minutes with added penalty time. What are the chances though the the team on the power play doesn't score during 5+ minutes of 4-on-3?
