true and as i mentioned i am 100% sure bergevin told PK and the group...we'll give you the big bucks at the end of this.

even when beaulieu, ellis and tinordi are ready - none of them have the skill-set of this kid

Next time PK has the hammer. Question is will he use it?

It is indeed a good deal but you guys need to realise is that if Subban continue to play like he did and improve even more he's going to cost a lot in 2 years.

A bridge deal is exactly what this is

Seems like they stood pat on the cap hit, but Subban is actually pocketing more money if the values is $2M (year 1) and $3.75M (year 2), because year one is only a half season. This shifts more of the money to year 2, which is a full season, getting Subban more $$$ than a $2.2M/$2.9M split. Cap hit is the same, and I don't think the Habs mind giving Subban some extra cash considering its a great contract for them.

If it's true that Subban did not have offer sheets available (I kinda doubt it), every GM in the league was just shooting themselves in the foot. This will do nothing to remove RFAs holding out to get paid, nor will it prevent them from getting paid in the future. It just helps Montreal have a good cap number for the next two years.

yeah he's going to cost 6 mill as expected. so what? At that point, guys like Kaberle, bouillon - maybe even markov will be off the books and all our good young D will be on entry level deals

It took 8 months to arrive to this ?

Good lesson for the other GMs and agents.

So it's really 2 years, $5.75M. Still a really good deal.

Thing is, that doesn't really matter. The Habs organization would be glad to give him a heavy contract after theses 2 years if he proves himself again (not that he didn't already but I mean if he improves even more). Bergevin had the cap space to sign him to a ludicrous contract but he didn't stuck to his principles, and got what he wanted, that's the important part.

Until you watch the next two years play out, you don't know whether or not this is true. Could well be short term gain, long term pain.

I guess Bergevin won the staring contest. We'll have to wait a couple of years to see if it is a long-term win or a short-term one.

This, next contract, Mtl is gonna wanna sign him to a 6+ term deal and will pay market Price, like they did with Price, it's just that when they Re working that deal, Subban will have 2 RFA years which should lower the cap hit, but important, the fear of Subban walking as a UFA isn't there.

PK got exactly what is worthing. Too many players are paid way too much after just a couple of seasons. Lots of time to make big bucks.

That's the real question though.. is Subban going to reach full potential? Maybe, but you don't pay for something you don't know, at least Marc Bergevin didn't here. If he does play, he'll make his money, and you can bet it'll be long term, the year before he's to go UFA

In 2 years we can just qualify him and go to arbitration, which should cost us about 5-5.5 M$ depending on how he plays. If he doesn't play that well, it could even be cheaper than 5 M$.

After that though, we better be ready to pony up some some major money.

We will pay in two years but we will have to pay one day anyway. Bergerin won that round.
