Just want to add as well that in our assessment of Yakupov we need to remember that he isn't just an 18 year old, he's an 18 year old adjusting to a new language and culture that makes coaching and development that much more difficult. In that regard, he's going to have it much harder than Hall or RNH. Nonetheless, he's got 3 goals in 5 games now. I think we ought to consider that a success. Kid's a special talent for sure.

I'm not giddy. The Avalanche made the Oilers look like a bunch of little twerps in the 3rd period. Without Landeskog and Steve Downie. We can't score 5 on 5, the 2nd line is a mess outside of Gagner (and are serving up turnovers left and right) and inexplicably Ryan Whitney and Corey Potter are a D pairing playing significant minutes.

Yeah... and at some point the referees are going to pack the whistles away just like they did last year and we'll have to find some 5 on 5 goals and secondary scoring.

My guess is it'll be much like every other time we play them. Passes being deflected, inability to gain the offensive zone, and an overwhelmingly frustrating affair that most likely ends in a loss. Phoenix games are the worst.

Hall was very good. Not a surprise for me.

Nuge is fine.

That top line is going to be killer when they hit their primes.

Its only 5 games, but Justin Schultz looks better defensively in the NHL than he did in the AHL... Guess it is easier to play with NSchultz than Deck & Marinicin.

Its hard to think about after a night as good as this one for hall, but yakupovs passes are absolute rockets and a little wild, eberle and rnh are the only guys on the team i can see recieving them, and they are good enough to ease him into the nhl. Carrying him as a passenger on the line until he's comfortable enough to step up himself.

Hall is a beast when he's on, but i don't really think he needs anyone in particular on his line to become that monster. He can do it all by himself, and with gagner playing so well in all three zones to compliment him, it might be alright.

I know its silly to change things after a win, but this was still a nerve racking one right to the end, against a severely depleted colorado team.
I don't think that breaking up Hall and Eberle is a good idea although Hall and Hemsky have worked well in the past. It seems that we are just going to have live with the growing pains that come along with Yakupov and they are very painful at times. I guess we've been spolied by Hall, Eberle and RNH coming in as rookies and handling themselves well so it's weird to see a rookie actually look like a rookie. The talent with Yak is obvious but it's also obvious that he's a project, still has 3 goals though which is a good sign.

As for the line juggling, I would switch Gagner and RNH. I know that the top line looked good today but RNH still doesn't seem to be meshing with the other two that well IMO. I like Gagner on that line where he can play support and not have to carry a line like he has had to do with Hemsky and Yakupov and like RNH as the guy who carries the line so i could see him thriving with Hemsky and Yakupov and he can slow down the game for those two who are trying to play way too fast.

A win's a win. But the anomalies and the unconvincing third has to be a gigantic pirate-sized red flag.

Ryan Whitney played 13 mins 5v5 and 5 mins on the PP... pretty good usage IMO

Corey Potter plated 13 and 2 PK....

im confused why you are so disappointed. Seems like fair minutes to me

actually if you look at the minutes, the game was well managed IMO.

Thanks for the clarification. I didn't check the stats. It certainly seemed like they were pinned in their own end every time they were out there 5 on 5 and that can slow down time dramatically.

One positive heading into the PHX game for us is that they don't really have a dynamic playmaker up front anymore since Whitney left for Dallas.

They play their same elite system, but it's basically all finishers and skaters rather than guys with real hockey IQ and play-making ability. In addition to that, their biggest shut-down guy, Martin Hanzal, is injured I believe. Great opportunity to steal 2 points.

Yakupov is capable of holding his own on the left side but I'd rather him in his natural position while he's still getting his feet wet in the league.

I do think they need to find a way for Yak to play on the side he is comfortable with. I think we would find that this would help a lot with his transition to the pro game.

Also, LA just tied it up with the nucks late in the third

Moving Yak to RW would surely mean spliting up Paajarvi and Harti..
Dont really want that done just yet..

I hope Kruger tries switching Hemsky and Yakupov...

Hemsky always ends up on the left side anyways. Plays left boards on PP\ Yak plays right side.. Make the switch at ES and see what happens..

We aren't going to get perfection, and shuffling things around right now is as bad idea IMO. We need to get people used to their roles. PRV is not a top 6 player, so why play him as one?
They created very little even strength offense if any. Aside from the goalie gaffe in the third I can't think of single even strength scoring chance they had.

As for Paajarvi I don't buy what he "is" or "isn't" yet. He's big and fast, and had more success controlling the puck in the opponent's zone than anyone on the second line (again talking even strength here). His puck handling is looking good this year. I guess Hartikainen would work too but Paajarvi's a LW which that line needs.

First post on hf boards and im glad it was a win!

Pretty decent game by the team, we played pretty well, definitely out playing colarado, but we started to fall apart during the third and we are lucky that not more than one went in. We held on to the lead and it ended up being a pretty good game!
