Has a player ever scored using another player's stick in the NHL?

Just a quick question. I kind of remember hearing something about this a few years ago, but could easily be mistaken. This would be if someone's stick breaks or gets knocked away, another player gives him their stick during the play, and the guy ends up scoring a goal with the new stick. I would assume it's rare seeing as the new stick would almost always go to the goalie or a defenseman.

So, has it happened before?

Not sure, but it would be neat if someone scored using someone else's stick that was also the wrong hand.

I think Bobby Ryan or Ryan Getzlaf did it a few years ago for Anaheim.

John Madden did it on a (shorthanded?) breakaway against Ottawa at the end of the 05-06 season. His stick broke and he retrieved a different one from the bench. I'm assuming that the stick he retrieved was not one of his own.

Bobby Ryan has also done it, using Mikko Koivu's stick in a game against the Wild. If I remember correctly, Koivu dropped or lost his stick, causing him to steal Ryan's stick right of out of Ryan's hands. Ryan then proceeded to pick up Koivu's discarded stick off of the ice and score - I think off a rebound or one timer. I believe this happened during the 10-11 season.

I dont have video, but Shanahan actually took a blues players stick and scored with it and it still counted when he was with the wings.

This will surely go down as one of the most bizarre plays in NHL history.

Watch carefully in the first 10 seconds or you'll miss it. Koivu (#9 white) loses his stick and pulls Ryan's (#9 black) stick right out of his hands.

Even better -- #20 for the Wild makes a halfway savvy play and slides Koivu's loose stick into the passing lane, then attacks from above. Pretty smart way to box in the play, provided an opponent doesn't pick up the loose stick and score with it.

And yes, the players have different handedness. So right-handed Ryan ends up scoring with Koivu's left-handed stick.

whoa, that is pretty crazy. Wish I could find a video of the Shanahan one, sounds somewhat similar.

Scoring with someone else's stick.

Has a goal ever been scored where a player broke/lost his stick and picked one up from a teammate? Maybe even one where the stick was the wrong handedness?

I've always been hazy on the difference between NHL and Hockey Canada rules, but as someone who has reffed probably around 200 hockey games in my life, I was positive when Ryan did that the goal shouldn't have been allowed. I'm pretty sure you are ok if you do it with a teammates stick, but you are not allowed to use an opposing players stick at any time. Koivu (IIRC) should have got the first penalty for taking Ryan's stick, and Ryan should have also received one if Minny didn't touch the puck before he took Koivu's.

Yeah, pretty sure MDZ got a penalty in a game last year for touching an opponents stick

Its a little confusing I guess, maybe the refs didnt notice what happened, im not sure

I'm assuming they had to miss what happened, because no matter what league you are in, what Koivu did was a penalty (just watched the video again, probably for the first time since the incident). A ref could call a bunch of different penalties there, basically his choice of holding the stick, interference or unsportsmanlike.

Easily one of the strangest plays in NHL history.

Came in to mention Ryan and Koivu, but not surprised to see that done already.

Happened again this season in Germany's DEL, which was rather funny. Former L.A. King John Tripp gave his stick from the bench to his teammate who ended up scoring a few seconds lateron. What made that a little more remarkable was that that game happened to be a televised one and Tripp happened to be the team's cable guy, and him foreseeing what was bound to happen ("Oh sh**, he's gonna score with my stick", "Watch this sh**, he's gonna do it" or pretty close) ended up caught on tape...

Del Zotto got a penalty for sliding a stick across the ice to a teammate.

Good job, took me forever to find it. Beware of NSFW language courtesy of John "Hans" Tripp, though.
