More marketing potential: Anze Kopitar vs. John Tavares

Here are two great players, playing in not-that-great hockey markets. However, they have different styles as players, both on-ice and off-ice, so they may not reach out to the same audience.

Who has the most marketing potential?

Tavares

Has a far higher hockey potential. Native English speaker. More physically attractive. Will likely be a member of Canadian Olympic team. Means more to his team than Kopitar does to the Kings.

Kopitar speaks english just as well. Is just as physically attractive, too bad he's from Slovenia, means just as much to his team as Tavares does to the Islanders. Without Kopitar, we will STILL suck; regardless if we have Richards, Carter, Quick, Doughty, etc.

Kopitar is a Cup-winner, while Tavares is a star player on a team that didn't make the playoffs since Tavares began playing in the NHL.

Kopitar is European. Even if he was the best forward all season long on a Cup winning team, there's a reason most of the praise was directed towards Brown and Quick.

Tavares has greater potential and is a good ol' Canadian boy. Easy answer.

Ovechkin, Lidstrom, Forsberg, Bure, Selanne...a lot of Europeans were marketed and attracted media attention. I simply think Kopitar's game isn't exciting enough to market him effectively. He's got an excellent and sound game but not the kind that will sell tickets like Ovechkin.

Kopitar speaks better English than some Americans....

He learned English at a young age, and has lived in LA since he was 19.

Also for Tavares to market anything; the NYI have to actually win something with him on the team...

Or at least make the playoff's.

tavares, unless the league thinks vampires are still "sexy" but honestly it is because tavares is younger, from north america and has a way more offensive skill and mind set

No they don't. If a company like Reebok, CCM etc was looking for a new face for a commercial they're making, do you think they care what NYI have won when deciding whether to market Tavares or Kopitar?

This is Tavares AINEC.

Tavares by about double.

More skilled, more exciting, very well spoken, clean cut, Canadian.

Since when?

Lundqvist, Ovechkin, Giroux and Stamkos are marketed all the time. What have they won in the NHL?

Tavares. Watch out when the Isles are about to move to Brooklyn. The NHL will market the **** out of him.

Well a Vezina and multiple Rocket Richard Trophies for one.. But also all three of these players are marquee players having led their teams to enormous success over the past several seasons. While Tavares and the Islanders have been mired in their bottom 5 finishes, Lundqvist led the Rangers to 1st in the Eastern Conference and to the ECF, Giroux went to the SCF in 09/10 and Stamkos (albeit carried by Lecavalier and St.Louis) went to the ECF in the 10/11.

The comparison of success between Stamkos/Lundqvist/Giroux and Tavares is enormous. But obviously the lack of success stems moreso from the inability of the Islanders to surround Tavares with quality talent as opposed to Tavares simply underachieving.

I voted Tavares, but on second thought, the whole zombie-genre is getting a bit of a revival in North America, so...
