Bettman's Twenty Year Anniversary

http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/89...full-ups-downs

He looks much happier in that photo next to Stevens than anything I've noticed recently. I guess 20 yrs as the head of the world's most difficult league might take a bit of shine off the smile.

Anyone in the mood to celebrate this glorious occasion?

Didn't think so.

Yes, why can't we just erase the past 20 years from the NHL, and go back to having League Presidents like John Ziegler.

Bettman hasn't lasted this long due incompetence.

Cant argue with his results

yes teams moved, yes markets have struggled/are struggling...

But he has made the NHL's revenues rocket up exponentially.

I always stop short of going this far. In a league that in 2008 purportedly had 90% of its revenue coming from individual teams, how much of the credit goes to the commissioner and how much to the teams?

I know I know

I still think most of the credit goes to Bettman.

He (or at least his regime) has done well with marketing the nhl by getting allot more sponsers, the out doors games, bigger and better tv deals.

Even Bernie Madoff's Ponzi scheme went undetected for 20-years...

Still waiting for someone who gives this much credit to Bettman to explain how he managed to raise the Canadian dollar to par.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montre...es-canada.html

"The increase in the value of the Canadian dollar may be responsible for as much as half of the league's revenue gains since the NHL went through the lockout of 2004-05, say several sources familiar with NHL finances."

yes that clearly helped.

Once again, if the owners thought he was doing as a ****** job as 90% of this place proclaims, how did he last 20 years?

I don't particularly like the man but he is the best thing that has happened for USA hockey.

(I should like him as we share something in common) it's a secret though.

To be fair, he also dealt with its drop.

I dont hate bettman. He grow thr sport from a 400 million dollar industry to 3 billion dollar industry just right behind the NBA. ALso he told ESPN to basically go **** themselves .

Positives with Bettman

1. League has grown, fan and revenue-wise
2. Player participation in the Olympics

Negatives
1. Three lockouts during his tenure, including the cancellation of a season (though the salary cap has helped the league).
2. Oversaw relocation of five franchises. Not necessarily his fault, but a black eye.
3. The nonsense for the past four years in Phoenix.
4. Awarding Atlanta an expansion team. Numerous markets struggling, but this is the one he should take the most blame for.

Seriously if you factor in that, and the amount in which all pro sports have sky rocketed in value, with the rise of big networks sports you really have to wonder.
