Ryan Smyth

The Oilers offense looks like this at the moment:

Hall - Nugent-Hopkins - Eberle
Yakupov - Gagner - Hemsky
Smyth - Horcoff - Petrell
Hartikainen - Belanger - Paajarvi
Hordichuk, Eager (IR), Jones (IR)

Jones and Eager are both injured right now but when they both get back the Oilers are going to have to make a decision. Paajarvi and Hartikainen have been playing good together and I don't think Krueger will want to send either down to the AHL. So that leaves a couple options.. either Hordichuk goes to waivers, or Smyth gets traded. With the way Harti and Paajarvi are playing Smyth is expendable and it would promote the two of them to the 3rd line, where they belong.

Flames fans any interest? EDM would probably explore that option before anything since he wants to stay in Alberta.

For the record, I don't think the Oilers would trade Smyth anywhere other than Calgary (a respectful move for what he's done for us) unless the offer was too good to pass up. So no 6th round picks, please.

You know when you look down at the gas gauge and even though the light hasn't come on you know you're going to need gas very soon......that's Ryan Smyth. The tank isn't empty but you aren't going to get far.

Curious as to what he's done since about the 25th game last season to warrant anything more than a 6th round pick? Don't bring up the Spengler Cup

A playoff team looking to add a veteran with experience will pay more than a 6th round pick. Let's be honest here.. His skating isn't there anymore but his production still might be. He's still a 10G 20A guy in a full season that brings a lot of experience and leadership to a contending team.

He won't live anywhere but Edmonton. Kinda limits the trade options.

Well he plays for the Oilers so that means we need to cut his value in half...

Unlike people's opinions on Sam Gagner, Smyth does have 0 value.

I'm sure there has to be someone slower, a goon at the very least.

Point does stand though.

Sure, but we could use a guy capable of putting up 30 points, that wants to be here, and is an excellent leader all while playing a bottom 6 role.

Like how Kovalev and Modin did? (Modin was actually helpful)

All Smyth can do now is park in front of the goalie, hope the team doesn't turn over the puck, and jab at the goalie when he's already made the save. He will take bad penalties BECAUSE he can't skate. Teams don't spend high picks for "leadership".

I puke at the thought oilers signed him for 2 years. He is way to slow to be on the oilers. I hope he hangs them up after this season.

Brendan Morrow says hi.

He might have some value at the deadline, but until teams start to get a feel for things he isn't a very attractive option.

His offense is drying up, but he still kills penalties well and is a leader. And why can't we bring up the SPengler Cup? He was on the winning team. Sounds like you don't want to talk about it because you don't have a rebuttal.

The quality of competition at the Spengler Cup is more Euro league than NHL calibre.

What is Smyth worth?

Getting rid of.

We did it and won the cup so in a way you could say that Smyth is somewhat responsible for the Kings winning the cup.

The Oilers should unload him on some unsuspecting patsy and then win the cup!

Yup guys sure get tired over the coarse of that 82 game Spengler Cup... oh wait...

Smytty is worn out. No value aside from sentimental, and only one team has that.
