I have been following this team since the days in Albany starting 06 before they moved to Charlotte..The Canes have players of NHL caliber talent that they A) Never give a chance b) Yoyo them up and down so how are they supposed to gell and prove themselves is beyond me C) They let great prospects go because they don't get the shot they deserve such as Michael Murphy or perhaps the "GENIUS" move of putting Carson on waivers one year..Instead they want to go out and waste money in Cam WardStaal brother instead of using the better talent by miles in the goaltending they have in the AHL level..They gave Ellis a chance this season as a backup what will he see 8-12 games at most ? They don't even use the backup during the season they ride Ward no matter how bad he plays..If they use a backup they get shelled most liekely wonder why ? oh wait its because they don't have the experience they should have you know by PLAYING instead of riding clown Ward..You can say oh he played x amount of games and never produced blah blah blah how can they produce when they can;t get the time to gell on a line..chemistry of teamates/linemates is a big thing when it comes to producing imo

They don't even know how to use Peters when he is up in a backup role if not starter worthy imo

Was it JR who traded three firsts for Glen Wesley?

It does seem you either make the NHL right away like Skinner or you get bounced up and down, line to line and role to role till you're on the waiver wire or a trade throw in. We seem to be a bit more patient with D. Seems like the iffy forwards have 0 time to build any chemistry and eventually earn their spot.

I'll offer the opposite suggestion: please stop.

Zach Boychuk isn't worth this.

2012 Traded
Ward -> Conn Smythe/Stanley Cup winner
Staal -> 100 point Stanley Cup winner
Ladd -> Tuomo Ruutu
Johnson -> Tim Gleason, cap dump, Eric Belanger (->Josef Vasicek)
2006 -> Doug Weight, Stanley Cup
Sutter -> part of Jordan Staal
Boychuk -> Bust
Paradis -> Jiri Tlusty
Skinner -> Calder winner
Murphy -> Remains to be seen
2012 -> part of Jordan Staal

Really the only criticism is of Boychuk. There is still plenty of success in each of these picks/moves.

If you want to criticize his first round picks, you started at the absolute worst year.

no matter of what, ladd-for-ruutu screams bad trade. ladd is captain material, great leader, hard worker, not an injury prone. ruutu was terrible and almost useless in 09 playoffs. he disappears since then.

imagine this

ladd- estaal- semin
jokinen- jstaal- skinner

Bylsma says Boychuk will bring "grit" to Malkin line. Well okay. Perhaps the Pens think they've claimed Johnny Boychuk?

Ladd since the trade: 353 games played, 96 goals, 213 points
Ruutu since the trade: 304 games played, 81 goals, 191 points

Ladd has the edge, slightly, in goals per game, and Ruutu, slightly, in points per game. If not for Ruutu's injuries, it'd be essentially a wash. Still not a trade to criticize JR over.

That's some fine work by their pro scouts.

I am at a loss to wonder how anyone could have watched Boychuk at any level and concluded that he "brings grit".

Looks like we'll see Boychuk back here in 2 weeks.

Ofcourse Ladd is in his prime and Ruutu likely peaked 2 years ago, which doesn't help.

The value we got for those picks is pretty solid.

11 picks, and we have Staal, Staal, Ward, Gleason, Ruutu, Tlusty, Skinner, Murphy, and Doug Weight for the cup run.

As for Boychuk, good for him. I think it was a game of circumstances for him all these years. 1st line or bust for a guy that probably belongs as the weakest player on a 2nd line. Will be interesting to see what he amounts to now that he's going to get a chance.

He's been my favorite for a couple of years now, I'm really hoping the front office is paying attention and can get him in the fold to start making some decisions.

@ice_chip

Rutherford on what kept Boychuk from being NHL player: "With us, his consistency."

Rutherford said if Pens at some point this year decide to put Boychuk back on waivers, Canes would claim him.
