If Spezza is out for the season, the BM comes out and declares that to be the case. It looks like he's had a set back, and now maybe he is looking a little better (although he's not even skating).

Bottom line, even Spezza doesn't know whether he can really play this season. I am sure he wants to, but at this point when he is not even on his skates, it doesn't look very good unfortunately.

May just be working extremely hard on building his core strength from knees to armpits so this injury does not continue to happen. When I was taking physio therapy they wanted us to push beyond what we could manage to try and strengthen the areas around the injury, as well as the injured area to prevent it from reoccurring.

I don't think any posters you should be taking seriously is advocating anything even remotely close to that.

I love Jason Spezza and think he's one of the better first line centremen in the NHL today (top 15 I'd argue) but even then I have to admit that giving him an 8 year contract is concerning since his back has always had issues and he'll be on the wrong side of 30 when he signs his next contract (so will I ).

Granted, it was my opinion, like 99.9% of the stuff posted here. But really, it doesn't make sense? I thought it was pretty articulate!

how can one infer from "Murray says that Spezza has felt better in the past 4 or 5 days. Still hasn't resumed skating at this point" that he is 3 weeks away from joining the team??

The same way one infers that in 7-10 days we'll hear Spezza's season is done.

Bumping this so it doesn't get lost.

Any updates? Read an article from 10 days ago that's said it could have been 2-3 weeks. What's changed?

A month!! Couldn't have been that long ago. It's frustrating that the club is so reluctant to give out info regarding injured players.

If they gave all the info right away, what would we have to look forward to? Bet you Spezz returns for playoffs.

He hasn't even resumed skating by himself yet, let alone practicing with the team. There is no way he will be ready in less than two weeks.

Cowen was skating by himself for a few weeks, then practicing with the team for 2 weeks before he stepped into a game.

Same. All we've heard is "setback". That setback must have been pretty big, because he hasn't skated since. I'd love to be wrong and see Spezza is the playoffs but it doesn't look good.

It's going to suck winning the cup this year with him on the sidelines.

Yeah, looking unlikely that we see him return this year. Very unfortunate.

i remember about 4-5 years ago after a playoff flameout arguing that it was time to trade spezza. i did that for two reasons:

-i believed he wasnt a player we could ever win with. his statements of "turnovers are just part of my game", and his seemingly neverending penchant for coughing up the puck in dangerous places made me think we couldnt win with him

-this was around the time of his first bout of back troubles, where it was reported that he had a "congenital condition" that was going to make him vulnerable to this throughout his career- he has an abnormally narrow spinal column, we were told.

with those two things in mind, i argued on other boards that we should trade him while he was a still a PPG centre who was healthy and in his prime. since then, he has cured problem no.1 and i've given him a ton of credit for that. he's matured, he has become much more responsible, and a healthy spezza as a no.1 C is someone i think we can win with. unfortunately, problem no.2 has reared its head and it won't go away. the trouble is, the secret's out now, this might limit him chronically, and we are never going to be able to get full value if we trade him.

the time to trade spezza has passed. he's too important as a no.1 C and his injuries make him very tough to trade to get good enough value back for him. we're stuck with him. if he comes back fully healthy we're fine. if he comes back permanently gimpy and limited, we're in trouble. but we're stuck with him now.

It's looking like it, although being "stuck" with a number 1 centre who's performed very well in the playoffs is hardly a problem

I still wouldn't have traded him knowing this

This could also be why the team is being extra cautious with him
