SCOUTING REPORT (Forecaster.ca)

Winger
First round pick, 14th overall, Carolina (2008)

Assets: Is versatile enough to be used in any game situation, and at any forward position. Has scoring potential, grit and hockey sense. Sets a good example in terms of his work ethic.

Flaws: His lack of ideal size for the pro game may hinder his ability to produce points on a consistent basis at the NHL level, so he may have to settle for a defensive role.

Career Potential: Versatile forward with some upside.

1) wouldn't they have to make room?

2) who is in charge of parade route planning?

I hope he has some nice suits because he is clearly too young to play for the Pens.

I remember that no so long ago Boychuk was considered as a top prospect. What happened to him?

Niskanen is on IR, so they can carry an extra player.

14th overall in 2008.

He's small, but has put up consistent numbers ar every level. Limited nhl time....which will only get more limited under bylsma.

I've never seen him play. Can anyone who has tell me if he is a 3rd/4th line guy or potentially line up with Sid or Geno?

Boychuk (our savior in the year 2013 of our Lord) just needs the right system to succeed.

Hey I'm all for taking a flyer on someone else's early draft pick that didn't pan out. Zero risk move. This could address some of what Jiggy was talking about in terms of Shero giving the bottom 6 a fresh look every couple years. Maybe we can "rehab" him the way we did Niskanen. Why did Carolina let him go? Just no room or was he playing lousy out there when given chances?

His camps have been terrible. Could be a combination of expecting to be handed a spot because of his draft position and/or poor offseason training.

In some ways, he's also a victim of the numbers. He's too small/non-physical to play in the bottom six, and his skill level was never good enough to keep up with the Top 6.

I imagine he'll put up points if you stick him in your Top 6, but considering he'll be playing with Crosby/Malkin, that's not saying much. I wouldn't call him a "steal" by any sense, since he's actually much closer to the "bust" label than that. He's really more of a Keith Aucoin player, IMO. Great AHL producer that simply couldn't transition his game to the NHL well.

But if he just needed a change of scenary, wish him the best.

Top 6 player or bust IMO. He's 5'9 180lbs. I've never seen him play, but he's been a solid stats guy at every level...doubt he's much of a grinder with that frame.

I am very happy about this. Great player for AHL level so will be able to lift WBS up there and can chip in if needs be on the big team.

Sounds like Boychuk will be added to the second-line roulette wheel at left wing.

Still learning the nuances of pro hockey and sometimes has lapses in the neutral and defensive zones.

Future

Should crack the Hurricanes lineup this season. In the long-term, has the ability to be a solid second line forward with the ability to play in all situations. His offensive instincts also suggest power play potential.
Works for me. Sounds like a slightly smaller but more skilled version of TK?

Cooke - Sutter - Boychuk with tweener option to play on Geno's line occasionally to mix things up?

He has to stay on the big club or Carolina can just take him back if we try to send him down.

Doesn't work that way unfortunately. Have to keep him with the big club. He'd go right back on waivers otherwise and Carolina would pick him right back up for their farm team if no one else claimed him.

EDIT: What he said. ^^^

I like it. He's skilled but also not out of place in the bottom 6 if his offense doesn't pan out. Hopefully it does with Sid or Geno.
