I'm really surprised Calgary didn't pick him up.

Pittsburgh might be a good fit for him. I wasn't one on the Canes board that fell into either camp (overly negative or overly positive) and I hope he gets a chance. He has some speed and skill, but for whatever reason hasn't been able to lock down a spot with the Canes (while guys like Skinner, Tlusty, Dalpe, and Bowman have). I think a lot of it has to do that while he is skilled, he hasn't been able to immediately produce (like Skinner has) so he has to be strong in other parts of his game in order to get playing time. The other guys (Tlusty, Dalpe, Bowman) have all shown they can play more physically, are stronger and are better defensively, even though I think Boychuk has better skill and offensive upside over those guys.

Where would he fit into our lineup?

Let's be a bit more fair about the "3 coaches" comment..it's really 2.

Laviolette was fired in December of 2008. Boychuk was still with Lethbridge for the 08-09 season. He got a 2 game trial with Carolina under Lavi only because his wrist was injured in training camp, before he was sent back to Lethbridge.

Yeah you're right. He fits into the pens easily but there would definitely be no room on that loaded Flames roster.

Poor wording on my part. He was given plenty of chances, but he just didn't make it stick.

Why would we need another winger, especially such a mediocre one?

Flames wingers > Pens wingers.

I love these waiver threads. Some first round pick from years back busts, gets waived, then a decent team claims him and everyone's like "HE'S GONNA TEAR IT UP!"

If he couldn't make the Canes, I doubt he'll outplay guys like Dupuis.

He can't possibly play as horrible with Malkin as Glass, Tangradi, Jeffrey or Kennedy, can he? As this point I'm expecting any player Shero brings in to fail.

Hopefully works out for him. Guy has the potential behind him still.

Dupuis job isn't on the line for now, the problem is a winger along side Geno and Neal. Boychuk will get his shot, nothing to lose maybe a change of scenery will do him some good

He was a first round pick? He had no trade value? 32p in 37g in the ahl as a 22 year isn't bad..

The last couple of waiver pickups by the Pens were Chris Bourque and Chris Conner, neither of which added much offense to the Pens either short term or long term. So I'll wait until Boychuk actually does something on the ice before getting excited just because he's a former first round pick.

How on earth can you forget Cal O'Reilly last year?

I think you have a misunderstanding of the term "top 9" if you think those are the only top 9 forwards on the Flames.

No kidding.

Good for Boychuk, hopefully he turns it around in Pittsburgh.

My mistake. In that case, the Pens' waiver wire pickups are awesome.
