without Niskanen on IR they would have had to open up a roster spot for Boychuk either by waiving someone themselves or sending Despres back to the AHL.

Because Niskanen went on the IR today, so we don't have to send anyone out or dump anyone for this move to be made.

Nothing except a roster spot. Niskanen is injured.

I like this move. I'm not confident it will work out - nobody should be - but this give the Penguins the opportunity to drop Dupuis down to Malkin-Neal and give them some extra speed, hard work, and grit while giving Kunitz-Crosby someone that has shown at other levels to have excellent skill. I know he was a C and I believe was used on the LW in Carolina but any side from Crosby should be a great opportunity for him to make a case for himself as an NHL quality hockey player.

Could be a decent move for Pittsburgh.

I wish the Flames would have taken a chance on Boychuk. I think it's a good move for the Pens.

Can't really say I'm surprised the Penguins are taking a look at him. Wouldn't hurt at the moment. Seems to have the skill and was a 1st round pick, just needs to put it together. Some even mentioned when he was put on waivers that Pittsburgh should consider it. He will be getting a golden opportunity with Pittsburgh.

Worst case scenario, he gets thrown back on waivers in a week or two. I don't think he'll amount to anything but it can't hurt to try since he has pedigree. It will create a competition for a winger spot between Jeffrey, Tangradi, and Boychuk and hopefully force Lovejoy on waivers.

Good pickup!

Sounds like we'll have a chance to see what this kids made of.

Sooooo essentially the Pens traded Staal for

Pouliot
Sutter
Dumoulin
Boychuk

3 first rounders and a 2nd rounder for Staal

That's not a fair assessment at all.

If we're going to make up fake trades this is far closer to Strait for Boychuk.

No. Not at all. The trade was Staal for Sutter + Dumoulin + first-round pick (Pouliot). Boychuk was claimed off waivers for free. He has nothing to do with that trade. I hate when this kind of "logic" is used. Actually it's lackthereof logic. There is none in this type of post. A trade is what it is. No essentials about it.

I don't think you can look at it that way. Although it is possible that the Pens really zeroed in and did their homework on the Canes prospects when they were negotiating a Staal trade with Carolina. They obviously chose Dumoulin as the prospect they wanted in that deal but maybe they liked Boychuk a bit too. Who knows.

I wouldn't be mad if they did dump Adams or Lovejoy though, both are horrid hockey players.

The kid can skate and he can play the left side, he has a good shot with either Sid or Geno's line. If he can't hack it, hopefully he makes it elsewhere. It is the better waiver pick up that Shero has made though, a 1st rounder (14th overall).

I have never seen anyone get so serious about a post like that, lol. The guy is just talking about what the Pens have gained from the Carolina Hurricanes so far, since the summer.

Not too shabby, eh?

Adams plays well on the fourth line. He has a purpose on this team. What's Tangradi's?

The Pens should have signed Gomez with some of the cap space from the Staal deal. Then you could say they got 3 first rounders, a 2nd rounder and an 80-point player for Staal.

Like it.

Think I'd rather see Boycuck with Sid and Dupuis though, because from what I've seen, the kid could easily keep up with those two, and if he has ANY hockey sense, he'll score at a pretty decent pace.

And it would reinstate the amazing that is Kunitz-Malkin-Neal.
