According to Austrian TV, she have broken her leg (tibia). One could suspect also that her knee(s) will be in a serious mess.
Unfortunately for Vonn, I think her career might be over. Especially if the knee injuries are serious.

Reportedly she was screaming in agony while she was being air lifted. Alpine skiing is a brutal, brutal sport. I still get the chills down my spine when I remember how Janica Kostelić got hurt.

Get well Lindsey.

ACL and MCL tear.

http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headline...d-after-crash/

Quote:
According to U.S. Ski Team Medical Director Kyle Wilkens, the 28-year-old competitive skier tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and the medial collateral ligament (MCL) of her right knee and suffered a lateral tibial plateau fracture.

“She will be out for the remainder of this season but is expected to return to racing for the 2013-14 Audi FIS World Cup season and the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia,” the U.S. team said in a statement.
Seems kinda premature to say she is expected back by the Olympics next year.

according to CNN;

Quote:
Vonn, 28, does not need immediate surgery on the "complex torn ligament" in her right knee,
said Dr. Christian Kaulfersch, who is treating her at the Schladming Hospital.

From the Denver Post:

Quote:
Austria ski federation president Peter Schroecksnadel said doctors told him that Vonn tore her cruciate and lateral ligaments,
adding that this is "the only injury she has, nothing besides this."

If Schroecksnadel is correct about Vonn's injuries, she would require a knee reconstruction.
That would put her on a difficult timeline for surgery and rehab before the Olympics 12 months away, but not an impossible one.

Sounds really awful.
Even if she would be able to ski again competitively would it be worth the risk of a new serious injury?

If you freeze it exactly when her right foot comes down, you can see it totally buckle.

Women are much more prone to torn ACL's due to their physique than men are, my cousin blew hers out twice playing college ball.

http://www.hughston.com/hha/a.acl.htm

"In Europe, participation in snow skiing and team handball results in up to eight times more ACL injuries in women than in men."

I've gotten the impression that she's one tough girl and wouldn't let this stop her from trying if she's fit to compete.

If the doctor uses a tendon graft method to repair the ACL (Most common surgical treatment) the ligament is actually stronger post recovery than it was before the injury.

The speed downhill ski racers go at these days in incredible. Johan Clarey recently became the first racer to top 100 miles per hour, which is just insane. Most racers completely wreck their knees because the body isn't designed to take so much impact. There's a reason the downhill is considered the original extreme sport, and I'd argue it's still the most extreme sport out there.

Here's hoping Lindsay Vonn can make it back for the Olympics because she's so good and so dominant, she deserves one more chance at glory.
