It was a very dirty hit-it was obvious it was going to be a 5-min major right after it happened. He deserves a few games-let's not let our Islander bias get in the way here. He made a hit that has no business in the game and could have caused a severe injury. Give him 2-3 games.

This.. I know most are pissed about the Kessel non-call but this hit was definitely a suspension worthy hit. It was extremely stupid and just cause the guy didn't get injured doesn't make it any better. He deserves at the very least a game.
Whats the difference? Why does one merit a suspension and not the other? Phaneuf got nothing!
Life's not fair. Just because Phaneuf may have deserved one and didn't get one-doesn't mean McDonald doesn't (or shouldn't).
Bertuzzi missed just 13 games+a playoffs series (he never served his full year suspension due to the lockout)-does that mean in order to get a 13 game+playoffs suspension than that you have to injure somebody into retirement? Of course not.
Refs missed a call on Phaneuf.. Doesn't change how awful of a move it was by McDonald.
Exactly... the worst part is that McDonald did it in the offensive zone with a 4-0 lead. Made absolutely no sense. I understand wanting to play hard but you gotta use your head a little bit.
Does MC Hammer have a history with bad hits? If no i say he does not receive a suspension. Bad play from him and i really truly do not think this was a situation where he was trying to hurt someone. Dion deserved a penalty but funny thing is he however is known to try to hurt people (not saying all are dirty).

Just because the ref's missed it doesn't mean he cannot be suspended for it. I thought Phaneuf should have received five just as I feel McDonald deserved five. The problem is there is absolutely no consistency from game to game, player to player, ref to ref in officiating games in the NHL. To me this is the most maddening part of the game.
So what are we thinking 2 games for McDonald? 1 for the hit, 1 for being an Islander.
You called it, and that is exactly what he got. One for the hit which was automatic if I remember the rules for majors, and one for being an Islander.
What I would like to know now is why either:
a) The Islanders never elevated the Phaneuf hit to Shanny, or
b) Why Dion's hit is not suspension worthy.
I had high hopes that Brendan would bring consistency to this job, and I think he has done better than Campbell ever did, but this is clearly inconsistent assuming the Isles asked for a review.
