I would take Kovalchuk the last couple of years over Ovechkin regardless of cap hit.

His ability to score 28 goals in this league combined with what else he brings to the table makes him perfectly valid for this discussion imo.

A 55-point player is not a star.

On topic, I wouldn't take Ovi because of his cap hit.

Kessel.

Softest 'star' player in the NHL. Sieve defensively to boot.

Off putting personality who shies away when the going gets tough.

Essentially a *****.

I was so happy that through the first page no one made a comment like this, so I could be the first one. You had to go and ruin it.

Fair enough.

I don't see why we can't talk about good solid players that aren't quite stars. I feel it's just as interesting, if it's alright with OP.

I would be ecstatic with any star heading towards the flames except:

Vincent Lecavalier
Tim Thomas
Dion Phaneuf - not because i'm trolling as flames fan. He used to be my favourite player.
Ilya Bryzgalov
Shane Doan - even if he is buddies with jarome

There's lots of good solid players that a number of people wouldn't want on their team for all kinds of reasons. Because they're merely good not great, it's not a huge deal if someone does or doesn't want them. Not wanting a star, on the other hand, makes the reasons why much more compelling.

Can I ask why not Shane Doan? He has always struck me as a prototypical Calgary flames workhorse/PWF.
