Brian Burke's parting gift may prove to be a very valuable one.
JVR seems to be a very well spoken, confident guy too. If he backs up his mouth with good play, I see him growing into a leadership role here.

No doubt. He was such an electrifying player early in his career.

Ooo, you're right! Second NHL assist for Komarov. Hopefully the league notices and adds that.

Dare I say I didn't hate Kessel tonight? He played well without scoring a goal, can't believe it. He actually was kinda physical, taking hits and even bumping Caps off pucks. I wish he would give this all around effort every game.

And Frattin's goal was fantastic, from the nifty pass to the unreal hands and patience on the finish.

I have no problem cheering this team on for a 9th or 10th place finish if it is built on the backs of our young guys. If Kadri, Frattin, JVR, Reimer, Gardiner, etc. are the reasons we're in that spot: fantastic. It's progress, and it's good news. The only time a 10th place finish should be frowned upon for this team is if it's just the veterans dragging the rest of the team up, a la Leafs circa Sundin era.

Frattin does have a better slapshot than Kessel, that was his main weapon of choice in the NCAA when he scored 36 goals in 44 games there:

You were talking about a stamkos esque set-up, thats what Frattin can do; Kessel can't. Kessel uses a quick wrister, not a Stamkos type bomb.

The more I watch that game-winner, the more I realize it was about 90% Fratting. What a display of hand-eye coordination. He should get an assist on his own goal.

He was the Leafs' leading scorer in the 196364, 196667 and 196970 seasons, and the team's top goal scorer in 197071 and 197273. Keon was considered one of the fastest skaters in the NHL, and one of the best defensive forwards of his era.[3] He would usually play against the opposing team's top centre, and developed a reputation for neutralizing some of the league's top scorers. In 197071, he scored eight shorthanded goals, setting an NHL record.
