Would the Maple Leafs trade Phil Kessel to the Ducks in exchange for Corey Perry?

http://thestar.blogs.com/thespin/201...h-er-duck.html

Quote:
See, if it turns out, as is being widely speculated, that the Anaheim Ducks can afford to keep only one their dynamic duo, Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry, and that Getzlaf is the one most likely to get the new long-term deal from the Ducks, then Perry could be available before the April 3rd trade deadline.

If that's the case and Perry hits the trade market, it's a competition the Leafs must be in.

Perry - who registered a nice three-assist effort in an Anaheim win over Nashville last night - isn't a perfect fit for the Leafs, a team desperate for a No. 1 centre. But he competes like hell, is a former Hart Trophy winner and the proud owner of a Stanley Cup ring. He'll be 28 in May, not too old to still be a dominant player for years to come.

He's the kind of player who could transform the Leafs in a way it was once believed Phil Kessel could, but clearly never will.

It will be an expensive deal to make, both in terms of players, and in terms of a contract. Perry deserves a sizeable increase on his current $4.875 million salary, and depending how high he wants to drive the price, he could be headed north of $8 million.

The Leafs can pay that. They'll have the room. They surely have the need to bring in a player who has actually accomplished something big in this league. And he's accomplished a few big things.

Assuming the Leafs would be very interested, here's where it gets really interesting. Ex-GM Brian Burke, as we know, is now a part-time scout with the Ducks. He can supply Anaheim with the inside dope on every single Leaf player and prospect, plus he knows how Nonis feels and thinks about every single Leaf player and prospect, and how he values them.

Leaf head coach Randy Carlyle, on the other hand, has intimate knowledge of the Anaheim roster. So that factor is somewhat counter-balanced.

Would Burke, who brought Kessel to Toronto and still believes in him, recommend the Ducks look at acquiring Silent Phil as part of a package for Perry? Would Nonis need to be able to have a contract in place with Perry before a trade could be consumated?

Theres not many teams that could best an offer of Kessel for Perry. Assuming we can talk to him before hand and get an extension of course

North of 8 mill? I don't see it.

I would do it in a heartbeat if we talked to his agent and would likely resign. Otherwise no. A month plus playoffs of Perry isn't worth it

Last year I wouldn't have, but seeing the way this team can play, and Carlyle wants it to play, Perry makes more sense. Just not a system built for Kessel. I'd do it instantly.

Smart move if the Ducks are interested. Re-signing Kessel for 7+ million is a terrible move especially since Nonis didn't approve of the deal in the first place (according to Burke).

Kessel is not a bad player. He's an elite offensive player. He doesn't fit this system.

He's dominate on the Islanders I'd think.

If the Leafs are maintaining this level of play all the way to the deadline despite Kessel, I'd definitely do it. Perry's from S Ontario, he's had success with Carlyle and we have cap flexibility it only makes sense. Not to mention, we'd have an immediate upgrade for a potential playoff run.

erm...Perry's going to FA, why would we trade for him? He's going to be the biggest name on the market this summer, so it's hard to see him signing an extension just because someone else trades for him. we just need to have the biggest money truck in the summer.

The same Cox who said that Nonis would "really have to think about it" in regards to trading Kessel for O'Reilly?

Cox is all over the map. His articles should be in the funnies section.

I would say the deal would only get done if Perry signs a deal with the Leafs.

For two months of Perry?

If he's signed it's one thing, but throwing away an asset like Kessel for two months of any player does not make sense.

If an extension can be worked out for Perry? Indubitably.

Why not keep both? the guy is going to free agency I dont know why you'd want to get rid of one for the other.

Having both on the team would be great.

In a heartbeat. I like Kessel but Corey Perry fits this system like a glove.

Lupul, Perry, JvR, Kulemin, Frattin, Komarov is still just as good on the wing.

If Perry signs with the Leafs...bye bye Kessel.

He finished top 5-6 in both goals and points last season. So define "bad"
