Mike Ribero to Sens at the deadline

Easy enough. Spezza out and Sens will need a replacement center. Although Doug Maclean (of all people) believes Sens would go for Weiss, I strongly believe Weiss is a core piece to the panthers future while the caps future is still in a bit of a smoke screen and may be best to sell ribs for a good prospect and pick.

If the Sens are going to trade for a center, they won't wait till the deadline when Spezza is presumably much closer to being back. They'd do it within the next couple weeks.

I dont think the Sens would deal for Ribiero of all people...

Theyre going to run with what theyve got for awhile...

The Sens look solid but are in a tough spot without Spezza.

They need to target a rental so they don't have to give up any significant youth.

Yeah, can't see Ottawa acquiring Mike Ribiero. I figure the team will roll without Spezza for a while. If they're still struggling in March without Spezza I think they go out and get someone.

Ottawa doesn't have Spezza, but they have chemistry, something they don't want to screw with. I think the Sens go with what they got for now.

I don't think Murray is interested in bringing in rentals who would cost any significant assets. He's made it clear that this is still a rebuilding team.

Why is Ottawa suddenly a team that needs to make that final push for the Stanley Cup?

We're rebuilding. Let the Spezza injury give us the opportunity to develop players in the system. Give Da Costa a well earned shot in a Top 6 role. Let Mika Zibanejad continue to impress us, give him a chance in the top 6. See if Peter Regin can regain his form from the Penguins series in the playoffs in a couple years.

Worse case scenario? The team plummets without Spezza, and we get a Top 10 pick.

I don't see an issue with the Sens going for it. They seem to be on the fast track to cup contention. If you have a window, you go for it. Lots of assets in the hopper to be flipped for depth at the deadline.

Sense are in a good position here, if they don't address the needs of the team and settle for a lottery pick, shame on their GM.

If we can get Weiss for picks/prospects not in the current line-up, then do it. It's not straying away from the rebuilding, it's accelerating it. Ribeiro wouldn't be a bad 2nd choice either and the cost might be less.

Ribeiro is one of the few things that's going well for the Caps this season. He's even making the Joel Ward contract look passable (he's assisted on 3 of Ward's 4 goals). I'd like to see him extended.

How is acquiring 3 months of a player "accelerating" a rebuild?

We're not actually a couple pieces away from winning the cup this year though. Cowen's done for the year, and our defence isn't exactly cup worthy. On the "fast track" to cup contention is not this year. Hey, maybe with a healthy Cowen and development with Silfverberg, Zibby, Wier, etc, we can take a run at it next year (as an underdog). Maybe Alfie comes back for one more year. But this year, we're not winning it all. Sorry.
