Yeah, Ovi's contract sucks, but people really don't give the guy enough credit.
He had 38 goals last year. How many guys hit that mark even once in their career?
Comparing Ovi to Gomez (who broke 20 goals ONCE), is a bit much.
Ovi's in a slump, or maybe on regressing, but his low point is still impressive. Any team would be eager to have a player who puts up those numbers.... just not at 9 mil/yer.
Washington wants the world for Ovechkin. Gonna make proposal look what they are looking for..... Hint the sarcasm face
No, we just don't want to trade him. Because then it'll just move on to the next guy. Last year it was Semin. This year it's Ovechkin. Backstrom has sucked aplenty himself but not one person points it out. Once Ovechkin is gone, everyone would be like "Backstrom sucks now, trade him for futures"
Not sure why any organization would want to tie their hands for the next decade with that contract, falling production and a generally petulant attitude.

Don't want to trade him also means asking price has to be the world. If theres a player you don't want to go but another team wants, you would ask the world for that player. Like, Hall for the oilers or Kessel for Leafs. If you're gonna make a proposal make it absolutely crazy

Wouldn't Ovie be a lot more tradeable if the Caps kept 3M of the cap hit?
6.5M Ovie if he performs near PPG is a great deal.
it depends, if the Leafs want to sell jerseys, they do this. if they want to win I would think they trow big money at a guy like Getzlaf, since they need a true #1 C.

And Jeff Carter was once a 45 goal scorer. You made my response for me by saying nobody wants him at that cap hit. Cap hits are just as important as a players skill.

Petulant attitude?
Lol
Also, not sure why any team would want one of the best players in the world on their team.
People that say that your team wouldn't take one of the best players in the world is just ****ing ridiculous.
Uncertain prospect quantity for superstar quality
Cap hit + decline + asking price. I'd trade a decent package(good young roster player, top prospect, 1st) but I wouldn't trade the king's ransom that it appears you guys would want in return.

I guess this is HF boards where Ovechkin's contract is compared to the class of Gomez, Redden, etc...
Ovechkin is only 27 years old and in his worst season he still potted 32 goals. Look at the trophy hardware and scoring races he has won. A lot of years left in him, I believe the Leafs have a strong core of forwards where he would gel well and bring playoff experience. Carlyle would make this guy work his balls off.
Yeah, unless you are implying Crosby here, I don`t see how you get the Pens side up to anywhere close to $16+M in caphit. It`s not like Backstrom is a bargain buy either.
The only way this could be made to work cap wise is by Washington retaining the max they can of both contracts on the books. Not that making it work out cap wise makes the proposal any more realistic or compliant with the OP´s "for futures" request.
