Roller Hockey in DC?

I just moved to NW DC, and I'm looking for anything roller hockey. It could be a league, tournaments, or just some places where guys like to play pick up games. Any help is much appreciated.

I organized two pickup games through the official boards, both of which turned out well. The last one was in January--miraculously it turned out to be like 75 degrees that day, although the rink was wet and we had to squeejee it down hardcore.

I don't even know how many times I slipped and fell. I was definitely hurting that next day. It was tons of fun though, especially since we got such amazing weather. I'd really like to do it again soon. It's definitely one of those "if you build (plan) it, they will come," type of things, especially if you post it on the official boards.

We played in a rink in Northern Va somewhere...I don't remember exactly. It was somewhere in Loudon county.

Maybe this thread could segway into a roller hockey pickup game?

I play pickup twice a week in NW DC.

The first game is Monday nights at 8pm-ish at the recreation center at Calvert Street and Wisconsin Avenue. PM me for details.

The other game is on Pennsylvania Avenue literally right in front of the White House on Saturdays at noon. Email WhiteHouseHockey@googlegroups.com for details.

I've definitely heard about that pickup by the WH. Too bad it's going to rain on Saturday....I'd be in otherwise.

That outside game was in Ashburn, fyi. The rink is just off the O&D trail.

Dulles Sportsplex is off RT28. Nice rink.
The Box is in Chantilly. A bit smaller rink. Newer. Also nice.
There's ball hockey in Alexandria on a rink that's located behind a school called Hammond (I think). Awful....but may be convenient.
Everything else I can think of is gettign even further from DC.

OH! Laurel (NW of City) has a great rink. Try there. I think it's at a place called the Ice House. Not sure of the names.

...some of that might be googleable.

Thats only for the summer, they put ice on it for the winter. There is a rink down in waldorf that has a rink for both ice and roller http://capitalclubhouse.com/

The Box is only about twenty minutes from my house and I've been meaning to go check it out and hopefully join a league. It is pretty nice from what I've heard.

The Alexandria league has a website, cant remember what it is, but you could google it.

I played there for a couple years about 3-4 years ago. The rink is concrete and its ball hockey. I had heard some people saying they didnt like it before joining but I had a great time playing there. The rink is concrete, which after trying a couple different indoor places with mesh and rubber surfaces, I can say concrete was the best by far. It didnt tear up my wheels as much and if you get the ultra hard outdoor wheels, you can actually mimic a sliding hockey stop since they arent quite as sticky. Cant rememebr the brand but they were orange and I ordered a bunch off hockey monkey.com.

Its was kinda like playground basketball, which can be more fun than gym basketball sometimes.

Ive been meaning to start playing there again but have been to busy/out of shape to play recently. I might look into again here soon.

I've played at the Alexandria rink for a few years now. There's a pretty solid pickup group on Fridays and Saturdays (10+ skaters, usually a goalie or two). There's a mailing list you can sign up for that serves to let everyone know who's planning on showing up to pickup so that you aren't stuck out there with 3 guys.

Yahoo Group:

Bump, I go to CUA, looking for an outdoor rink that is metro accessable with nets to just shoot around at today.

If anyone knows anywhere, please let me know!

There is a ball hockey drop-in style games in Northern Virginia, that's about all that I know of.

Ice leagues are Ashburn Ice House if you live in this area.

Not super close to the metro, but there's a rink at Watkins Elementary at 12th and D Streets SE. It's probably less than half a mile from the metro at Penn and 8th SE.

Not so sure about nets though. I play in a regular Monday night game there, and we bring our own.

There are two outdoor rinks, one with boards (I believe, it's been awhile since I go there) and the other with chicken wire in Northern Virginia.

Boards: next to Douglas High School in Leesburg, Virginia

Chicken wire: in Franklin Park in Purcellville, Virginia.

They all have standard nets and benches.

I'm pretty sure the Raue Pond is still there off Seminary Rd. in Alexandria close to 395. It isn't super metro accessible but it isn't Leesburg either...

Used to go there all the time. Would go there very late in the night and play under the lights. Great time until cops would come kick us off. it's just off the interstate, not too hard to find. You may have to join a league to play there though. I remember them having organized pick ups on friday nights, but i don't know if that happens anymore
