In my personal, subjective opinion, my favorite team, the Vancouver Canucks have a boring name. It does nothing for me. It conveys nothing of the traits I'd prefer to see in a hockey team, the way say, "Bruins," conveys aggression and size, for example.
What teams if any, to you, have a boring name? And why? And do you think that team should change its name, or is it just too established to make a change worthwhile?
I think the Wild is lame. I also happen not to like names that aren't pluralized. It makes it weird when you say "Zach Parise is the newest...Wild." Saying "Zach Parise is a former Devil" just works better.
Canucks - what the heck is a Canuck?
Ducks - oh, look a duck, so intimidating...
Penguins - psh, there are no penguins in Pittsburgh.
Rangers - looks like everyone wants to be the nerdy blue power ranger.
Coyotes - might as well be the Wily E. Coyotes.
Flyers - which is it, a shoe or a wagon?
Leafs - a leaf, really?
Islanders always conveys the sense of being lazy and not serious for me, for some reason.
Not sure if there are any others off the top of my head. Leafs and Habs could be deemed boring names, but they have too much history behind them to include them.
EDIT: Ducks without the "Mighty" is also kind of lame.
Respectfully disagree with the history aspect, at least the last 46 years worth. Not defending the Islander's name but who was the last team to win four cups in a row? When was the last Leafs cup? Last Leafs visit to the playoffs?
