judging by on-ice play (style/effort), and locker room talk, i'd give it to a guy like brooks laich tbh. yes hes not the best player on the team, maybe top 5 or whatever, but he has the qualities of a 'C'. ovechkin doesnt, thats for sure.
I love Vinny as Captain, but Marty could carry the C too. Both are great leaders and mentors to the younger players. Vinny has taken Conacher under his wing.
Heh... just realized it. Marty (undrafted) takes the #1 overall pick (Stamkos) under his wing. Vinny (#1 overall pick) takes the undrafted rookie (Conacher) under his wing. Funny how that works out.
The Leafs don't have anyone. Remember, there was a period where they were thinking either Kaberle, Beauchemin and Komisarek (and most wanted it to be Komisarek or Schenn!). I think when Phaneuf was acquired, everyone knew he was going to be named captain. He's been one of my favourite players since his rookie season, but I just don't see the on ice leadership.
Hopefully Tyler Biggs can be a solid NHLer, because he'd be my pick. Reminds me of Clark-lite.
It's a pity, Toronto was spoiled for about 20 years with three great captains in Clark, Gilmour and Sundin. All different styles of captain, all tremendously respected throughout the league and amongst their teammates. And then Sundin is replaced with Dion. As much as I like him, we all know he's a laughing stock.
He's everything you'd want in a captain. He busts his ass every shift, comes through in the clutch and takes the C on his sweater very seriously. He even rented out the practice rink the Hawks use for all of the guys who were still in Chicago and lead drills and scrimmages during the lockout.
Two years from now I can already tell I'd want Komorov.
He was the captain for Team Finland at the 2007 juniors, and was a captain for Moscow Dynamo in the KHL.

Also, he has the beard of a true NHL captain
This. He looks like someone you want leading the team.
For now, Dion or Joffrey Lupul seem right. I like Lupul's drive.
I think Pominville is a good captain, but if I had to choose someone else I'd pick who ever is the most vocal in the locker room...which is impossible to know as a fan. Based on on-ice performance, I think any of the following would be good choices:
- Erhoff
- Vanek
- Stafford
- Kaleta
- Hecht
I don't mind Thornton as the captain, but if I had to absolutely pick another Captain...Dan Boyle would be my pick. Doesn't take losing for an answer, has the balls to call people out and himself if he so sucks. Has all the makings of an NHL Captain IMO.
