The talk about suspension length is pointless. The league had a problem with cheap shots, so they decided to be stricter on suspensions with the Shanaban program...and guess what? It hasnt done ****! This crap still keeps happening.
If the league doesnt want the players to police themselves, then the league should police them in a method that actually matters. Give Erskin a major, a game misconduct, and a double minor on top of that play. Flyers get a 5 minute guaranteed PP and a chance to score two 5 on 3 goals. In most cases, the team awarded the PP is going to be fired up, and will be able to score 1, 2, maybe even 3 goals. The player guilty of the gross play will then have to face his teammates, his coach, and his organization for costing his team the game (especially if its in the playoffs). I think that is a much harsher penalty for the team and the player than any suspension.
The fact that he got nothing on that play just sends the message that what he did was ok...it makes the league look really dumb. Yeah, he'll prob sit a few games...but so what? Does that really hurt him or the caps that much?

This does nothing when the refs on the ice literally all around the play didn't even call a minor.
And this WAS a flash knockout, it's pretty obvious with the way simmonds body stiffens up and his arms go in the "fencing" position. What actually woke him back up is when he hit the back of his head on the ice. This is common when guys get knocked out, only to be knocked back conscious by the next blow.
Luckily preliminary tests have said it's probably not a concussion, but we'll know more tomorrow.

I know, that is what I am being critical of. I was more suggesting how things should be, not how they are. I think the whole suspension witch hunt has left the refs feeling like it isnt their responsibility to punish a play like this. If they miss it, who cares? The league should deal with it. In this case since the refs failed to act, they should be disciplined as well.
However, I didn't get the feeling that Erskine really wanted and was trying to elbow Simmonds in the head. I got the feeling that he just stuck his elbow out there as a reaction of some type while skating for the loose puck.
Nonetheless, everyone has to be responsible for their elbows. With no prior suspension history, I think Erskine will get 2 games. But anyone's guess is as good as mine.
Go figure. People go into watching it thinking "elbow elbow elbow," stupid announcers JoeB and Locker are terrible, so are the Flyers ones and you come out thinking "elbow!"
Dirty flagrant elbow? LOL. He some how threw a malicious elbow while being able to position his stick to try and get the puck? Do you guys think Erskine is that good not to mention able to do it that fast?

Interesting when the beanchmark or "good" is lowered to being able to move your arms independently.

So do you think his elbow came up and hit Simmonds in the face by accident?
Did he react to Simmonds going by him and try to slow him down and caught him in the face?
You have these things attached to your arms.. They are called hands and wrists... While lifting your elbow, you can still control your stick... Crazy eh? Especially for a guy who carries a stick for a living..
How anyone can see that play as not blatant is beyond comprehension...

Yeah... Almost like Neal who left his feet and hit Coturier's head to "protect himself from the impact"
