3 Impressions: Isles 5, Pens 4 SO

By Sam Kasan
Quote:
Penguins assistant coach Gary Agnew gives his three impressions from the bench from the Penguins’ 5-4 shootout loss against the NY Islanders at CONSOL Energy Center.

1. We didn’t get the start that we wanted. They came on us fast and furious, took the quick lead. It was good that we were able to fight our way back into the game and get a point.
2. The (Evgeni) Malkin line, the chemistry now, looks like they’ve got something going. A solid effort from them.
3. Fleury, although he gave up the goals, kept us in the game for a lot of the time, certainly in the end when we gave up a couple point-blank chances that could have cost us the game. He was big.

Lineup is sure to change, and Greiss will be in net.

With no pre-game morning skate I'll take a stab at the lineup with Megna's call up.

Kunitz, Crosby, Comeau
Spaling, Malkin, Hornqvist
Bennett, Sutter, Downie
Megna, Goc, Adams

Martin, Letang
Maatta, Ehrhoff
Scuderi, Despres/Bortuzzo

Greiss, Fleury

I expect the Pens to address the horrid defensive lapses that happened last night. We also need the top line to put up some points. Can't rely on the 3rd line to be the most productive even though they clearly have the most chemistry.

I know Johnston wants to keep Malkin and Hornqvist together but just for this game I think it would be a good change of pace of to put Hornqvist with Crosby. Maybe it'll throw the NYI off a little bit.

I don't think that it necessarily will, give it time.

I know I saw the goal..I just felt reuniting the 1st line might spark Crosby's game tonight. More importantly it's probably good that Johnston is giving Hornqvist opportunities with both Crosby and Malkin to let him develop chemistry with both players.

as much as i doubt megna plays it would be really ****** to call the guy up in the middle of playing so dominant in the AHL and then just send him down again nice and cold

We're in dire need of Wing help, I highly expect Megs will be in the starting lineup soon and for a while..Since no one want to trade with us I guess the next best thing Rutherford can do is find a dead bird on the side of the road and claim he got "a winger."

Games like tonight make me miss Engelland. Not his defense obviously, just his nuclear deterrent.

I'd rather Downie on a good day.. but besides the point as far as "nuclear deterrant" there are other guys in the league better than Engelland.

Not to mention last year he showed a surprising ability to chip in offensively every now and then.

Going to see the Penguins in person for the first time since '05. So happy. The long road to stinky Nassau awaits. So pumped.

Get some revenge for last night boys. Show 'em who's king of the Metro.

Given that Bennett has had no practice time in the top 6 yet AFAIK, I'm hoping for the following lines:

Kunitz-Crosby-Megna
Comeau-Malkin-Hornqvist
Bennett-Sutter-Downie
Spaling-Goc-Adams

Failing that, swap Downie and Megna.

Hopefully they don't lay an egg for 2/3 of the game like they did last night. What was that?

I could only catch the game on radio last night. It sounded as if (or at least the conclusions I drew) were that there wasn't necessarily any system breakdowns or anything structurally lacking the Pens D, they just played collectively like crap. Fair statement?

This team misses Godard more than anything. Swap out Adams and replace him with an enforcer. Roll with a fourth-line with Comeau and Goc. Get a power-forward on the top-six and the team is heading in the right direction.

Downie is a Matt Cooke replacement. He is not a deterrent. No one ie a afraid of a 5'10" punching bag that runs his mouth. Which is completely fine because team misses Matt Cooke and Downie very similar to him. But, let's not act the issue with the team's toughness is solved by the signing.

And, Deryk Engelland was a fine bottom-pairing defenseman. It's your typical HFBoards mentality that claimed he sucked.

Edit: We are talking about Engelland's playing ability. His cap-hit isn't as bad as people claim it is.

At 3 million per season the Flames are paying him?

Everybody with the exception of a couple of guys looked lackadaisical and passing the puck seemed to be a real problem, especially in the defensive zone. I lost count of how many times they made a half hearted clearing attempt or just gave a puck right to an Isles player, completely unpressured. To quote Therrien, it was a patetic performance.

1) Name an enforcer out there that would fit on the Pens.

2) Engelland was serviceable, at best. "Fine" is a stretch.
