This thread isn't the most exciting. Just bored with my team not playing tonight I guess.
But their names have been around for so long, it might have made a lot more sense back then. That's more what I was referring to. Back in the day I don't think it was as common to call teams "Sharks" or "Panthers" or whatnot. Looking back at some of the names of Stanley Cup winners on Wikipedia, a lot of those names would sound strange in todays league. Millionaires and Maroons and whatnot.

If not for the football team, we could have gone with "Lions."

Or...the Vancouver...Cascades/Cascadians?

Since we're talking about names, what team had a smoother name change in all of sports with a move to a new city than the North Stars going to Dallas as the Stars?

Glad Minnesota and Winnipeg got NHL teams back on ice. Maybe Quebec will one day.

Not big on anything generic.

Flames, Stars, Lightning, Wild, Jets are all pretty boring.

With team names like that, I tend to avoid saying it at all costs... like, "he is now playing for Minnesota" as opposed to trying to call anybody a Wild.

I love the name Canucks. Maybe I'm biased though haha but I've always loved that name.

Wild is probably my least favourite. And Predators.

Wild, Blues, Lightning, Canadiens, Capitals, Stars, Maple Leafs, Avalanche, and Blue Jackets are all boring names for pro sports teams to me.

#1 dumbest team name has got to go to the Minnesota "Wild"

Why the heck would you name a team after the Wilderness?

They also have one of the ugliest jerseys in the leauge. I give their fans props for wearing that Xmas sweater out in public.

I assume that you're a Canuck fan by your user name. If that's true, you shouldn't say anything about the Wild's Christmas sweater when you guys had the Halloween sweater.

Good:
Anaheim Ducks (I wish they had a mallard theme on their sweaters and in their coloring. Have you ever seen a mallard up close? Very interesting to observe).

Boston Bruins (Bears are tough and they smell bad. Hockey is a tough sport and it smells bad, too. Not as bad as basketball, though).

Florida Panthers (There is such a thing as a Florida panther, and the panther is a very fine sporting animal).

Ottawa Senators (I love the name and the logo).

Phoenix Coyotes (In a world of wolves, huskies, and those other things, coyotes get no respect).

Pittsburgh Penguins (Penguins are grand).

Toronto Maple Leafs (It could not make more sense).

Vancouver Canucks (It is the best name to say).

Meh:
Chicago Blackhawks (Old names make no sense, but it makes even less sense to change them).

Columbus Blue Jackets (A boring name for a boring city's beautiful team of Anisimov and his pals).

Dallas Stars (Dalis and Starr are both names you don't want to give your daughter).

Detroit Red Wings (Nothing wrong with it).

Edmonton Oilers (At least it's unique-ish).

Los Angeles Kings (A lot of people say "kink" or "kingk" and that hurts this for me).

Montréal Canadiens (Do they even want to be part of Canada)?

New Jersey Devils (My favorite team. I don't know what I would name an NJ team, so whatever).

New York Islanders (When they move to Brooklyn, this becomes a bad name).

New York Rangers (When I think Rangers, I think, like, parks, and stuff. When I think NYC, I think, like, not good things).

Philadelphia Flyers (I get a lot of flyers in my newspaper. Philadelphia has some newspapers. It makes sense).

St. Louis Blues (It's kind of a sad name. They should have a cat playing a sax on their sweater).

Winnipeg Jets (City name is good, so that's redeeming).

Bad:
Buffalo Sabres (Buffalo Buffalo please now thanks).

Calgary Flames (Red hot and so cliché. Also bizarrely mismatched for a sport played on ice).

Carolina Hurricanes (Very insensitive name to people, especially children, who have been impacted by a huricane, and it doesn't get a pass. It was made in an era where we knew better).

Colorado Avalanche (I do not like this name. Oh no I do not).

Minnesota Wild (Minnesota's anything but, which is why I like it).

Nashville Predators (Pierre as coach or change the name).

San José Sharks (Sharks are known for their teeth. Hockey players don't have any).

Tampa Bay Lightning (Doesn't seem so menacing. After all, it's just God flying His helicopter).

Washington Capitals (Calling players cities when they play for just one city).

It's perfectly fitting, has intimidation, a cool backstory and a sweet logo. What's there not to love about it?

Not sure why so many people think Lightning is a boring name. I mean if it was not for the awesomeness of Lightning Marty never would have made it back to he future.

1.21 Giga Watts is boring? I think not.
