We have 9 NHL defensemen, one of the best D cores in the league. Much better than the Leafs D core... why would you trade us D? That makes no sense.
I wouldn't say you guys are stacked as your dmen are getting up there in age but a team does not trade a player like Couture.

You want to make the claim that our forward core is getting old and we don't have too much youth coming up? Fine. You're completely off base when it comes to defense, though.

We could have added more it was late and didn't want to draw a long list.

Still you got my point Couture is a future superstar in the nhl Gardiner is not.

Leafs add big time. Regardless doesn't matter, Sharks don't move Cout at all.

Kessel wouldn't fit into our system at all, so there is reason for us to acquire him (barring severe underpayment).

Huh?

Boyle = 36 (would agree, definitely up there in age) (1 more year after this)
Stuart = 33 (kind of up there in age) (just signed 3 more years)
Murray = 32 (like Stuart, kind of) (Impending UFA)
Burns = 27
Vlasic = 25
Braun = 25
Demers = 24
Irwin = 25
Petrecki = 23

So 3 of the Sharks current defensemen are 30 or older, with one impending UFA (Murray) who probably won't be back and may even be traded this year. But the core of the defense is 27 and younger, and that's only because Burns is there. Otherwise it's 25 and younger. Leaving out all of the all of the guys over 30, the Sharks can still field a decent defense. And Stuart is in place for 2 more years after this to fit in right next to Demers, so that ??? is already answered.

Burns - Vlasic
??? - Demers
Irwin - Braun
Petrecki

Then add Acolatse, Abeltshauser, and Tennyson as those who will be pushing for a NHL slot in the next few years and the Sharks really have no major worries on defense for the foreseeable future. Certainly not due to age.

Heck, if DW is smart he will trade Boyle after this year for a good package that add even more depth (although what the Sharks need is top-6 forward talent).

No way man, no way
Did you watch the Anaheim game? When Boyle isn't playing the team is lost. He controls the offensive flow of the team, not Thornton. I think he has at least 2-3 more years of playing at a high level after this season, dude keeps himself in pristine shape.

Why the heck are we trading forwards for defensemen?

Couture is not available. End of story. He is the most valuable forward we have.

Leafs should be adding the first not the Sharks.

If you want Couture, you are going to need to add the 1st not the Sharks. Couture is worth more than Kessel, he is better defensively, already one of the better centers in the league.

And Couture is not a UFA in one more year like Kessel, he's an RFA.

This post perfectly sums up why the Leafs are a bad team.

A similarly-aged forward with a similar contract/contract status and more skill than Logan.

Are you ******** me? You realize we live in a cap world, right? In a vacuum, Kessel is the better player (and a perfect fit on JT's wing), but considering contracts and FA status, there's no way the Sharks would move Couture straight up for Kessel, nevermind their first too.

This is the type of deal only a fan of Edmonton or Toronto can come up with. I fail to see how this helps San Jose.
