A team with some good young pieces but no overall plan.
I can see the plan for the defence with Rielly and Gardiner and some other good pieces. No number one center and still unproven goaltending. Two of the key building blocks for most successful teams. They look to be a team that will improve but not develop into a real contender.

Still a bottom 5 team. They have a good foundation to build on in terms of their defenseman but they are weak up the middle. Centers and Goalie. They have yet to replace Sundin in terms of skill up the middle. I'm not really sold on Kadri becoming a legit #1 center. I see him more as a #2 center in the future. Tyler Bozak is not a number #1 center.

It's not just unloading vets dude... it's NOT trading away your picks.

And Burke didn't trade for picks he dealt for vets. I give him credit because he actually made some pretty decent deals (like I said, I consider him a good GM who made some mistakes) but he didn't rebuild. Jake Gardiner was a good move but he didn't rebuild man.

Hell, he flat out said he was against rebuilding...

If Milbury is able to notice something you're know it's bad.

If Milbury thinks the Leafs D sucks we must be great. This is excellent news!

TBH, when the D gets healthy and the group is (ideally) narrowed down to
Phaneuf
Gunnarsson
Gardiner
Komisarek
Liles
Franson

it shouldn't be too bad, having 3 AHLers in the lineup is killing them

I don't get why Leaf fans act like they're the Yankees of Hockey. Everyone and their mother knows that Montreal is the most historic NHL team. Morenz, Plante, Harvey, Richard, LaFleur, Beliveau, Dryden, Robinson, Roy.... 24 Stanley Cups. The Leafs don't even compare.

Calling the Leafs the crown jewel franchise cuz they have the most fans? So are the Knicks the crown jewel of the NBA? I don't think so.

I dislike the Leafs but I reckon that their fans have been far too loyal year in and year out!

they have some good pieces - and with hot goaltending they're in the mix from 6-10

their D looks good for the future...a bit weak up front (prospects)...but kessel, lupul, grabovski, kadri, phaneuf, etc....are not bad players.

they must resign kessel. not an option to let him walk or trade him.

they're a piece or two away from being consistent playoff contenders.

not sure i like what carlisle is doing playing both orr and mclaren - seems like a waste of a line

Mike Kostka needs to go. Like really why the **** is this guy still playing 20+ mins a night? It like they're losing on purpose!

Call up Rynnas! Or would that be too obvious?

Kostka was embarrassingly out of position leaving Jordan Staal wide open in front of the net. It wasn't just for a second either, it was for a good while.

We're an NHL team icing 3 career AHLers out of the 6 D spots, with 1 of them on the top pairing. What does this say even if Kostka's been doing decent ES?

At this point, I'd have to agree with this assessment.

Playoff contenders? Maybe. Contenders, that's another story.

It all depends on your goals. If the goal is 8th place, they aren't far off. If they want a cup? Not so much.

I've said since from the time of the Kessel trade that he was the wrong horse for the Leafs to attach their cart to. But I don't think they should trade him. They've made too big of an investment to turn back now.

If I were the Leafs, I would do everything I could to get Ryan O'Reilly into Blue and White, and yes, that would include trading their 2013 first round pick. He would be the future number 1 center they sorely need.

What the Leafs need to do is get ( or develop ) top 6 players who are two way studs, which is another reason why nabbing O'Reilly would be huge. No more Lupul's or Kessel's in terms of players who are great at one end of the ice but below average in the two most important zones ( D and Neutral ). Those two should not be on the same line together. Yes, offensively they had chemistry but they lack passion in their responsibilities in their own end and it resonates throughout the whole lineup when those two are out on the ice for 20 minutes a game showcasing their poor defensive IQ. The Leafs have had one of the worst team defenses I've seen in hockey for 4 seasons in a row now.

Reimer will be fine. The future studs on their blueline will be fine ( Reilly, Gardiner ). If they plan on holding on to Phaneuf, they need to find him the right partner. A great defensive dman like Doug Murray would be huge...he'd be not only someone to shore up and hide Phaneuf's defensive lapses but he'd be a defensive mind that Phaneuf could look up to and learn from. He hasn't had that in Toronto.

So to fix the Leafs, I would do these things...

- find takers for Lupul, Grabovski, McArthur, Liles, Komisarek at the deadline.

- Swing trades to land Doug Murray, Ryan Clowe, Ryan O'Reilly, and Loui Ericksson.

- Emphasis on structured team defense and pattern the styles after the Rangers, Devils, and Bruins: tough to play against teams with high team defensive IQ and scoring depth.

2013-2014

Clowe -- O'Reilly -- Kessel

Eriksson -- Kadri -- JVR

Kulemin -- Bozak -- Frattin

Komarov -- McClement -- Brown

At least one strong two way player on each line. Added size to the wings with Clowe and Eriksson. Stud number 1 center in the making in O'Reilly to help take the pressure off of Kessel.

Phaneuf - Murray

Gardiner - Gunnarson

Reilly - Franson

Ideally you'd like to see at least one more veteran defensive dman presence to be a true contender, but there's a lot of talent here. If they could get their act together and with extra emphasis on the forwards to help in the D-zone, the young talent could really blossom.

Again, just my idea of changing the Leafs franchise around... not what I think WILL happen, just something that I think SHOULD happen if they want to start climbing back up the ladder in the East and contending with the elite teams.

Never said it was realistic, just players I would target in a fantasy scenario. It doesn't even have to be those specific players... just players with size, building around a top six with better two way players, and finding a number 1 center. I can't stand the Leafs, but if they want to see success again, they need to flush out the crap, install some better team orientated top 6 guys, and find someone to take the pressure off their top winger and top dman.
