Effort-schmeffort. The Oilers are too small, and until that changes, they'll be pushed around by teams with big, strong defensive pairings and the result will continue to be a lack of puck possession and a lop-sided shot clock.

As for that last powerplay, I have on word: dysfunction. Gagner's set-up pass for a one-timer was 4' behind his target (didnt see who).

He didn't just skate hard. He was the Oilers only consistent threat 5 on 5.

Sick and tired of the second line carrying this team.
Sick and tired of the horrible play by the defencemen.

This might be the first time I've ever felt sorry for Dubnyk ... he deserved better today.

No way.

Our top unit were the ones consistently turning it over.

it was pretty pathetic for more than the last 30 minutes.
the avs kicked the oilers butts for 59 minutes.

until they can string together some games of consistant play, nobody is going to take the oilers seriously. not even us fans.

and i know it's beating a dead horse, but why the heck is that pylon whitney still on the team? if anyone should be benched, it's him.
he is completely useless.

stupid oilers.

How about top line scoring? The top line of the Oilers has a combined 5 goals all season.

God, the Hemsky hate is stupid here. As is the Dubnyk hate. And the Gagner hate, which is finally starting to abate. And soon, I'm guessing Nuge'll start to get it if he doesn't start putting up points.

Typical post-loss HFOil comments: "Trade so-and-so, bench so-and-so, so-and-so needs to get way less ice time, so-and-so isn't as talented as we thought, Krueger and Tambellini suck, and this team is the same team it has been for the past 6 years."

That about right?

Overall, I expected them to be tired today, and if they'd been able to capitalize on even one more scoring chance in the first 30, they get a new set of legs and probably come out ahead. Wasn't meant to be, and they ran out of gas for the final 30. Young team, youthful mistakes, and they'll regroup and move on.

This team is expected to compete for an 8th spot, not division title. Borderline playoff teams have games like this and the Calgary one where they just run out of steam or motivation when things aren't going well for them. They'll also have dominant games where they will completely run rough-shod over teams like Chicago last year. Neither is a reflection of this team, and so far, I've been quite pleased with the improvement-- even the first 30 minutes today were solid.

C'mon guys, keep things in perspective.

1. Whitney is a liability. Given that Potter and then Peckham will be the alternatives, I'm not sure how to solve that one internally.

2. We're playing a little too cute in certain situations.

3. Credit to the Avs, they wanted it more.

4. Dubnyk played well today.

This was a game when we needed a goal from the 3rd or 4th line. We didn't get it.
It's not one game. The Oilers have been giving up a tonne of shots for four straight games now and it's become progressively harder for them to pull of their so-called patented miracle comeback. Disturbing trends have been mounting ever since the win against LA.

The Avs played on the same nights as the Oilers; Calgary and Vancouver.

Smid with a piss poor read to gift them their 2nd goal. Whitney blows, Hall with some piss poor passing/decision making on the last PP as well. Hemsky had a MUCH better game than his last few so that was a positive. Dubnyk did his best and wasn't the reason that we lost. We sure could use a bigger guy that likes to play the body to bang the hell out of their blueline on the forecheck, anytime now Tambo.....

I think it's time to give Peckham another chance but unfortunately, I can't see them sitting Whitney.

I'd say the odds were pretty well in Justin's favor, 15ft out, right in the slot, had it all cranked up!!

When oh when will those top chances that the first line generates go in? We could have had at least 2 more goals here.

How can you not see how disastrous this team is on 5on5 every game? I agree, it's early so writing the team off from playoffs would be premature at this point. However, if they're going to be a playoff team, one would assume that 5on5 play needs to improve big time.

The inability to play 60 minutes continues to haunt this team.

Just gotta say I really like Yakupov, even after his little umad bit at the end. Wish he was on the Avs, he's got a wicked shot and he's a smart player too. He also seems to really just love playing hockey.

I thought you guys played a good game today despite some of the comments.
