Best Special Teams

Hello all... long time lurker, first time post!

This thread is actually inspired by my Islanders currently having the best power play and penalty kill in the league. I know this won't keep up, but it's nice to see at least for now. In any event, I was wondering if anyone knew the last time a team finished the year with both the best power play and best penalty kill. I checked stats for the last 10 years and it hasn't happened, plus my Google searches didn't produce any results so does anyone know?

And just so my first thread die as soon as an answer is found, I was wondering what everyone thinks of their team's special teams so far this year and what team do you think has the best chance this year to finish with both the best PP and PK?

Looking forward to the answers!

The Habs probably have the #1 PP of the last 7 years combined thanks to Markov.

We've always been pretty good on the PK so your special teams have been good over the last few years.

The Bruins are definitely not contenders for best PP; but our penalty kill has been decent so far.

Jets are rocking the PK this year. We're aiming for first place! All we need to do is take 27 penalties a game and kill them all off and we're golden!

If you were to take an average of each teams' penalty kill and power play percentage and then rank them on that average, this is what that ranking would look like for best toal special teams play. obviously i just did this right now and so this will only be accurate until they play again tomorrow and things change. but for now:

1. NY Islanders
2. San Jose
3t. Tampa Bay
3t. Edmonton
3t. Ottawa
6. Chicago
7t. Montreal
7t. Pittsburgh
9. St. Louis
10. Phoenix
11t. New Jersey
11t. Columbus
13t. Minnesota
13t. Boston
15. Florida
16t. Anaheim
16t. Buffalo
18. Dallas
19. Nashville
20. Calgary
21. Vancouver
22. Toronto
23. Philadelphia
24. Winnipeg
25. Washington
26. Los Angeles
27. NY Rangers
28. Detroit
29. Colorado
30. Carolina

The Rangers have to have the best PK, they manage to effectively kill off powerplays for both teams

Haha no one read the OP. The closest was probably the Canucks in 2010, best PP and tied for 2nd in PK.

Sounds like they're responding mostly to the part that said "I was wondering what everyone thinks of their team's special teams so far this year..."

Sharks, Bolts and Hawks in a upper class, they all have 2 waves full of talent who could switch easily both. Islanders are great in PP also, but i see one excellent PP wave and not 2 like in the 3 teams up.

islanders have a better pk than pp, now that the 2nd pk unit is also doing their part.

The Bruins have a very good PK. Their PP is awful though, but they probably take twice as many penalties per game as their opposition, so having a better PK is probably a good thing.
