And the game didn't even make it to OT. He was on the ice for almost 60% of the game.

When was the last time someone logged that much TOI in regulation?

He has been logging ridiculous TOI all season.

Per Aportzline it was Dan Boyle on 2/23/2008. He played 37 minutes

@Aportzline : #CBJ Jack Johnson's ice time (34:59) is most in reg game since Dan Boyle (TB) played 37:03 vs Boston on 2/23/08. Thanks Elias Sports Bureau.

Seems like a ton of players are logging in excess of 25 minutes a night this year, more so than normally.

Yep, 21 players have logged over 25 minutes a night this year, while last year it was only 11 players.

Makes no sense given the sprint-like nature of a shortened season.

On the contrary I think it makes sense. The season may be a sprint but most of the time there's a day between games. 48 game season makes it sustainable to not worry too much about fatigue in the long run.

Seems pretty stupid considering that means he is taking ice time from Nikitin-Tyutin

More injuries? I guarantee Doughty wouldn't be averaging 25:00+ if Mitchell and Greene were healthy.

JJ had to make up lost ice time from Wisniewski and neither Nikitin nor Aucoin were playing hence the big minutes.

Not stupid considering Nikitin didn't play the game due to injury and Wisniewski left during the 2nd period also due to injury. That's two of their top 4 gone.

That's very impressive but if I'm a Jackets fan I hope he doesn't play 33+ minutes every night. Quick way for a guy to get burned out in a season like this.

a lot of it's probably just that you're comparing 8 games to 82

I imagine much more than 11 players had that much ice time/game through 8 games last year too

Columbus has Nikitin and Aucoin out. Wiz took a ride into the boards in the 2nd period suffering a concussion.

Meanwhile Jack Johnson just says "yes sir" and puts the defense on his back. Props to Moore, Savard, and Erixon for looking like they belong.

Yeah what with Nikitin being out, Wiz just about killing himself in the second, and 3 of the 5 remaining d being Moore, Savard and Erixon (all promising but young) that left the heavy lifting to JJ and Tyutin.

Well CLB traded Carter for him, so they better get good use out of him.

Sometimes that looked like they were changing only JJ's defensive partners while he was on the ice all the time. He was like "perpetuum mobile", played with everyone, both left and right side, PP and PK. He's got some sense of humor as well:

Quote:
Told that he played 34:59, #CBJ D Jack Johnson shook his head and sighed. "One more second."

It doesn't happen that often in the NHL but in the CHL top defensemen regularly log over 35 minutes.

Say what you want about JJ's hockey sense, but the guy has the attitude of a champion and puts it all out on the ice every night. This is from a Kings fan.

I agree. His play has picked up significantly since he was traded. While he's obviously talented with regards to offense and his transitioning the puck through the neutral zone, his defensive play has been quite good.

I don't blame LA Kings fans for their views of him because I watched him when he played there and he didn't look like the player he is now except for that stretch when Doughty was injured. I don't know if he thrives being "the guy" or if he worked on it in the offseason. At the moment he's a good #2 defenseman, ok #1. That's really all Columbus can ask for in my opinion.

By the way, he set the franchise record for TOI with 34:59 and only is behind Doughty with regards to average TOI in the league.

Jack is a beast. I don't think "burned out" is part of his vocabulary.

Doughty and Johnson are #1 and #2 currently in overall TOI.
