Would be tough, but Boston would have to say no...Right now...Damn that's a tough one...Don't offer it this summer if he fizzles again in the playoffs because then its unfair.

Horton and ference for a 1st round pick and hemsky. I figure if Paul gaustad can get a 1st Horton is worth more then one. That spill over plus ference equals hemsky

Oilers aren't out of the basement. They would be stupid to give up a first for a pending UFA. Wouldn't happen.
You aren't going to get the prototypical PWF (like Lucic) without giving up one of the big 5. You could go for a lesser impact player (ala Penner) a reclamation project, or a prospect (Kassian).
Last year was the first time RJ Umberger has missed games to injury in the past four seasons - his entire Blue Jackets career. He played 77 games.
In that same period, Hemsky has yet to MAKE IT to 77 games in a single season - his tops was 72 in 2008-2009 - and he's only exceeded that once in nine full NHL seasons (the year after the lockout). Umberger had more goals scored in 2009-2010, and more points scored in 2010-2011, than Hemsky had games played in either season. And they're one year apart in age - both roughly at the same respective points in their career arcs.
No, I wouldn't trade RJ for Hemsky.
I would on contract length alone. RJ is not playing well at all and in major decline. Healthy Hemsky is better than RJ and has more potential to be a game changer IMO. You make compelling points however.

Gaustad only got a 1st because Nashville had a legitimate chance at the cup and Detroit's offer was a 2nd. We didn't want our biggest rival getting him in what was our best bet for the cup. The contract on the other hand is pure Poile stupidity. Edmonton would be even stupider to give a 1st for Horton.

I think that is what the Oilers best hopes would be. Adding a player who might not be a power forward right now, but given the right circumstances/opportunity could become one. Not even a blue chip prospect. But just someone who could benefit from an opportunity with the team. As a fan of the Oilers I would rather they take a look at a long shot rather than giving up substantial pieces for something more proven.

exactly, I would go with a young/struggling player and take a chance on him for low cost. PWF just cost way to much at a primed age.

Contract length is the only point I'd consider - RJ's current contract term does extend beyond what I think will be his effective career life.
That said, Hemsky seems to be slumping as well, and arguably even more dramatically, relatively speaking, than RJ. (Down from .80-1 points per game to about half a point)

Thanks, Howson, for cleaning up MacLean's toxic waste. Welcome, Kekalainen; let's get good things built!

This is the only strategy that makes sense. There are so few effective top 6 "power forwards" in the game today that they are more or less not for sale.
As a Flyer fan, I'd offer Wayne Simmonds and a pretty sizeable + but it'd have to land one of Hall, Eberle, or Yakupov to play w/ Giroux.
Not sure if EDM would ever consider something like that, but I think Wayne Simmonds fits to the T the type of player you're looking for and it would definitely take a lot to get him out of Philly.
