Martinek To IR

http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Dee-K...5-am/129/49019

Some things never cease to amaze me.

Edit: My appologies, Staple says its is likely but has not happened yet.

**Not sure how to post a tweet**

Arthur Staple ‏@StapeNewsday
Radek Martinek having MRI today for possible abdominal injury. Seems likely he will go on IR to make room for Bailey. #Isles

Did they ever intend to play Martinek or was he just pure insurance? Interesting that the injury comes out just as Bailey and Vis are about to join the team which would have forced roster moves in the next few days anyway. Maybe Finley to go as the other move leaving us with 7 defensemen and 14 forwards on the 23 man roster?

Ya, I have a suspicion that they may have ordinarily not put Marty on the IR (based on no actual evidence). But this gives them some roster flexibility.

He was signed to play, and then we picked up three defensemen on waivers. I feel bad for the guy but here we are.

i also think the surprising play of Strait has made it easier to push Marty aside...although he had an awful giveaway last night

very true. Strait earned those marty-minutes with his play.

I worry about Visnovsky defensively and I think Marty would be a perfect D-partner for him. Both very good skaters, little on the small side, but Martinek is mistake-free and his in-zone coverage is pretty great (at least, it was)

And can we just rebrand him "mIRtinek"? long overdue.

Strait isn't competing with Marty....he took the top line spot with Streit (though we ALL know that's second pairing>.

Marty has Finley and Carkner (I don't remove Carkner> and Hickey in his way. All three are not of the same quality. Marty is probably being held out, has a minor injury and is on IR so Bailey can come up. Marty coming in later when the season wears on, the Isles are playing better.....I'd take that. We're going for the playoffs, despite Okposo and Reasoner both dressing.

When Viz is back, look at Finley pairing with him and Carkner #7. Next injury, Marty likely gets the nod. We have tough, we have puck moving, we have snipers....we need someone along with AMac and Strait to play reliable D. Finley is decent, but not very reliable. (though I'm impressed and want his game to evolve>

Someone has to go when Viz gets here and I don't think it will be Hickey or Carkner. Finley will have to go back on waivers.

Martinek on IR is somehow very convenient given the immediate return of Bailey and the arrival of Viz...
Does anyone know what procedures the League (or naybe rather the NHLPA) have in place to ensure that IR isn't used as a strategic tool handling roster size?

You're right, I think that is the most likely option.. Another option would be to send down Cizikas. I don't know if I like that, but its a possibility and allows us to keep all the dmen.

Finely is also signed for another year after this one, that might play into some team's thinking about whether or not they want to pick him up (in actuality I think only Buffalo would really be interested).

Don't they need to clear another spot for Bailey too?

They have 1 spot open with Martinek on the IR. they will use that spot for Vis most likely and need to make one more spot this week for Bailey. However they will need one more spot when Martinek needs to come off the IR.

I expect Finley to be put on waivers very soon to accommodate Vis or Bails.

How come DP doesn't get the same love? Not saying necessarily from you but from other posters.

Both are injury prone.

Is it because of the contract DP was given? (not his fault), the high profile position? His personality?

I could see them waiving Finley, but I'd still prefer to see Boulton go.

Boulton fills more of a role. He's not going anywhere.

Agreed. Boulton is the 13th forward and while he is a liability on the ice, they're going to need him to play Deputy from time to time. Considering the condensed schedule and the amount of division games, bad blood can develop at a moment's notice and he'll be needed.

Add in the excess amount of dmen we have I think the writing is pretty much on the wall for Finley.
