I know everyone says meyers because his high expecations but I don't really think eirhoff has done all that well either.

what are they to do, make some moves?

It's really only the one pairing that's killing us.

Ehrhoff has been a beast, couldn't ask for anything more from him. The problem really comes down to 3-57

The problem is clearly Myers for me.
If he could play like the #1D that the organization has decided he is (which wasn't really based on his recent play), others would slot in better.
With his terrible play, the defense essentially becomes trash on trash.

As for Ehrhoff, he's actually been a bright spot this season.
His ability to carry the play has been notably better than every other member of the blueline.

This season there's not much to do. Regehr has a NTC/NMC so I doubt he gets traded unless a legit SC contender comes calling. Leopold should be dealt at the deadline for whatever he's worth (a 3-4th rder).

In the summer I orginally hoped to sign Edler but he's wrapped up in Vancouver now. There really aren't any impact FA d-men in their prime after that, so trade is the only way to really improve.

I like the idea of Weber stepping in for Regehr, but I'm not sure Pysyk, McNabb, or any other d-man prospect is going to step up next season.

Regardless of roster moves, I'd like to see the whole d-corps move away from this apparent preference to stick wave and poke check and start taking the body more. I don't know if that's more the personnel or the coaching but it's weak and needs to change.

Let's be a bit more realistic here:

Ehrhoff: A good Puck Moving d-man. Ideally a 2nd pairing guy. PP specialist who will log 18-23 minutes a game

Sulzer: A 6/7 guy that has been thrust into a top 4 role due to him playing well with Ehrhoff towards the end of the year last year. A guy who can play on your 2nd PK unit, but very very replacable

Sekera- A top 4 guy who has good speed and can make a good outlet pass. Good positional with the occasional brain cramp. Very mobile

Regehr- A defense first, 4/5 guy at this point of his career. Still some nastiness left in him

Weber- He's probably a guy who should get a bit more of a look. He's a mobile guy with a physical side. If he could get his positioning down he'd be person we could perhaps pair with Myers to cover his ass.

And on Myers, he's out of sorts right now. Looks like something isn't right. Not quite sure what.

Maybe that knee injury he had in europe? I don't know, I'm grasping at straws...its unusual for guys to just completely forget how to play hockey

If we had those five and a real number 1 Defenseman out there I would feel comfortable, unfortunately we don't have a number 1 but we have a bottom pairing guy thats paid like a number one

Hyperbole much? Myers isn't a bottom pairing guy. He's a top pairing guy that is struggling.

And a bottom 4 of:

Ehrhoff-Sekera
Regehr-Weber

Is actually pretty ok. The issue is that building a bottom four is pretty easy. Finding the top pairing guy(s) is what makes it tough. We need a Partner for Myers, sooner rather than Later.

Ehrhoff was an all star before coming to the Sabres and is the best D on the team. There aren't many players I'll defend, but Ehrhoff is one of them.

I hope the Sabres use one of their buy outs on Myers after the season.

Wagon before horse imo. We need Myers to be the Myers we all expected but has actually *never* yet materialized on any consistent basis. Ehrhoff is the best defenseman on this team atm AINEC.

IMO, he looks a lot like he did when he put on a bunch of weight and muscle prior to his 2nd season.

Took him half a season to adjust to his body. I wonder if there is something physically amiss with him.

You can sure tell this d-core didn't have much of a training camp, nor are used to each others positioning yet. With such a short season, they don't have much time to figure it out either. But I think trades are a bad idea because then your sort of starting all over again from scratch. As much pain as it causes to watch sometimes for the fans, the only way to work this out is with time. Their really isn't any such thing as an immediate fix, and that really sucks in a 48 game season when your playing just about every other night....

Remember we were suppose to have one of the best defenses in the league last year? We really need a true no 1 that can play a ton of minutes. Right now, there are 93 d-men that are averaging 20+ minutes of ice time in the NHL, we have 2 of them, and one is Jordan Leopold. I don't think we've had a reliable #1 work horse in the past 10 years that played 25+ minutes every night, this has been a huge hole in our team.

I wish we were bad enough to get Seth Jones, but the fact is we will finish 10-12 in the East most likely.

Trade to get Tallinder back? Devils have too many d-men and maybe he could help stabilize Myers.

Not sure if his play has fallen off or not, but might be worth it.

Tallinder-Myers
Ehrhoff-Sulzer
Weber-Sekera

Trade Leopold

Regehr and Weber can swap to stay fresh unless we trade Regehr to a contender

Devils fans have been complaining about Tallinder ever since they got him, I'm pretty sure he is the most disliked player on NJ. He is 34 now, I'll pass based on Devils fans opinions of him.

Ehrhoff has been our best defenseman. Sekera has looked good for the most part, Sulzer and Weber have been ok. The biggest problem is that Myers is hot garbage and Leopold is right there with him. Ruff should be keeping them apart, but he probably won't.

Tallinder is 3 years older. He's not any faster. He's not any healthier. He's not going to go from logging 16 minutes a night to 23-24 minutes. He's got another year left on his deal after this one.

That sucks to hear, I thought it was a mistake letting him go after he played so well that year.

Myers really needs some stability; he's gone through a bunch of defensive partners and needs someone to complement his style.

Any young Tallinders out there?

I can't figure out why Myers is paired with Leo. I'd like to see him with Sekera, who IMHO is a more reliable D-man. They could, and maybe should, be our top D-pair, so why not let them grow into it?

Besides that, I don't understand Myers play. He too must be frustrated and feel that his game isn't working, so why not try to keep it simple? Start with the basics, stay at home, get the puck out. Simple, ugly play. Hasn't anyone told him he's a defenceman?

And I would really like Tallinder back, if he can still provide and the price is not to high. I miss the days when Sabres was a hard team to beat because of the solid D from Tallinder and Lydman. Now it's like opponents don't even have to try - they just have to wait for us to eff it up ourselves.
