Fox's ambitious plan to challenge ESPN fits with historical approach

Quote:
Something else that sets the Fox plan apart is where they're starting from. While they're late to the game in terms of getting an all-sports cable network off the ground, they're ahead of NBC and CBS on several critical fronts. Most importantly, there's distribution: Speed is already in 87 million homes, which would seem to give them an edge over both NBC and CBS. That distribution may change significantly depending on how willing providers are to accept the subscriber fee increase Fox is proposing, but it's a great starting point. Almost as crucially, though, Fox already has an impressive array of content lined up for the new channel, including MLB, Pac 12 football, soccer, MMA and NASCAR. A key problem CBS and NBC have faced with their cable offerings thus far is getting in-demand live sports content; NBC's key cable property is the NHL, which has drawn strong ratings thus far this season but hurt the network's other content with its half-year lockout, while CBS hasn't been able to draw too many top-tier live events at all. Fox already has deals in place that will let them transfer some content from FX and regional networks to the new Fox Sports 1 and 2, so they may have a stronger array of live sports content than their competitors despite their late launch.

Cart before horse.....

They can't charge that much without big sports content.

FOX already has the ability to creat two networks by merging their regional sports networks into one network and by using speed network as a second network.

If you look at V contracts out there ---there really isnt all that much to be gotten given their very long term nature.

the sports out there worth anything:

NFL
MLB
NBA
NHL
PGA
MLS
Tennis
NASCAR
Indy/CART
NCAA football
NCAA basketball M & W
NCAA baseball
world soccer
formula 1 racing

many of these are locked up in contracts for the next 5 years or longer.

In terms pf sports coverage you have ESPN family, NBC SN, CBS SN, as well as major sports own TV networks.

They already created a successful network TV station from nothing, a successful news station from nothing, so I wouldn't be too surprised if they managed to make a successful sports network from almost nothing.

We're going from not enough to way too many sports networks in rather short order

While their news station has significant viewership, it is widely considered to be a joke. Hopefully their sports network will be more credible.

Money before credibility. As much of a joke Fox News is, they're trouncing CNN and MSNBC left and right.

I'm sure that the bigwigs over at Fox would be more than willing to laugh all the way to the bank yet again if their national sports channel is widely viewed as a joke and yet giving ESPN a run for its money.

Why can't NBC Sports Network do the same thing w/ the Comcast Sports Networks?

Fox isn't merging their RSNs into a second network, I've got no idea where that came from.

I'd rather have multiple choices than a monopoly.

Sports news has sucked for years because ESPN has had a monopoly on it and uses it as their own promoting machine almost exclusively for the NBA.

The UFC is a huge property that is missing from this list. Belongs right after the NBA.

Besides the local teams, what does your local Fox Sports affiliate show? FS West is pretty useless outside of the local teams. Reruns of poker tournaments and fishing...

Think that was just a random order. Not listed in terms of popularity.
