NJD distrubition of TOI

I found it interesting last night that Kovalchuk logged over 30 minutes and 5 other Devil forward played less than 10 minutes.

Yeah we are 3-0 but I find this very alarming and worrisome. Lamoriello needs to make a move IMO. They need to be able to distribute the TOI more.

Yeah, that's too much ice-time. Maybe they think with a 48 game schedule they can do that. I'm not sure.

How many games did Kovalchuk play in Russia, though? The wear and tear could add up by season's end if he keeps playing those minutes.

Inflated a bit, as Kovalchuk plays all 2 minutes of the powerplay. He's mostly on the point, so he's not really getting too gassed out there as well.

I guess if you have the horse, ride it.

Did you watch the game? Zidlicky, Greene, Zubrus, Zajac, Salvador, and Elias played over 20 minutes and Fayne played a few seconds under 20. Zajac played over 25 minutes. In the third period alone, the Devils got 5 penalties in 5 minutes... and the Caps took five penalties in the second. Over half this game was played on special teams. There was also a full overtime period since Kovy scored with 20 some odd seconds left.

When you have almost half the game on special teams you have guys like Barch who sits, Matteau who is a rookie and can't yet play special teams situations in close games, and Tedenby who is still a defensive work in progress... the bench is shortened. Hell by the end of the game they even had Bernier on the power play and penalty kill.

Kovy played 23 minutes against Philly and 24 against the Islanders.

With Kovy we have a guy who is dynamic and can play both sides of the puck. He's even a top penalty killer now. He has really proved he's a better overall hockey player than Ovechkin.

Why doesn't Larson everv play?

DET can take him off your hands, 1st + 2nd + Miller?

30 minutes is 30 minutes whether on ES PP or PK. The bottom line is the devils need to utilize the whole bench if they plan to be successful

He plays on the PP and the PK, usually the entire PP. The Devils had to kill 6 power plays in the 3rd. It's a weird game to look at TOI. Nothing to judge from. We move on.

Larsson will get his chance, i have a feeling he is sitting right now so Lou can showcase some of our defensemen that are potentially on the trading block. We'll make a move for a forward within the first month or two of the season and Larsson will get his spot back.... he played a lot of games in the A so he is in game shape, and ready to go.

or we had a powerplay in OT right after he had his first shift, he went off for a couple shifts after the PP, then came back on to score the game winner. PDB sent out 3 or 4 different groups of forwards in OT, smart enough to let Kovy back on to end the game for us.

This is nothing new, Kovy plays the full 2 minutes every PP and stays out the full 5 in overtime.

As for everyone else getting so little time, there was so much special teams play last night I wouldn't put too much stock into it. Especially when three of the five are Krys Barch, Mattias Tedenby, and an 18 year old rookie.

Kovalchuk averaged 24:26 last year, almost 2 minutes more per game than the second highest forward, Martin St. Louis, at 22:37

I like the Devils and I don't see a problem here. He wants to play, the coach wants to play him and the fans want to watch him play. Win-win!

The thing to understand is that this is Ilya Kovalchuk. The guy is a freakish athlete. Huge guy, great speed, great endurance.

Didn't go over this last year? Devils made it to the finals. Kovy can handle it... the coaches we've had (DeBoer, Oates, Robinson, Barr, Shaw, Lemaire, Tremblay, Stevens... as well as Lou) are certainly not stupid lol.

I don't know why, but Detroit fans seem to universally be big Kovalchuk fans.

Obviously I'm biased... but is it possible to NOT like him? I mean he constantly gets praise about how great a teammate he is... came to a new team and completely changed his game and plays defense and passes a lot and penalty kills... the guy is amazing haha.

people will dislike him just based on the fact that people like him so yeah its possible to not like him

Kovalchuk has been one of my favourite players since he entered the league, always enjoyed watching him play.
