Tomas Kaberle

The guy definitely has no place left in the top 4 let alone the bottom pairing.

Markov - Emelin
Subban - Gorges
Diaz - Bouillon

Kaberle is one expensive extra, we're better off using Weber and his horrid defensive skills or maybe try signing a 7th defenseman/trading for one. So for all the teams in need of a low quality top 4 Dman and a powerplay specialist...offer up.

Maybe.

I don't hate Kabs as much as most.

Meh, I'm not sure I'd pencil Komi into Montreal's d-core, which would make a trade quite moot (although he'd probably be a better 7-D instead of Kabs based on the Has depth chart). He might get the nod over Frankie Boo, but he certainly wouldn't supplant Emelin (league leader in hits) as Markov's regular D partner.

Montreal isn't in cap hell after dumping Gomer and signing Subban cheap so I could see them trading salary for salary in that deal. They wouldn't need a buyout to stay cap compliant. I'm just not sure Montreal wants Komi back after the way he left (or Komi wants to come knowing the way he could he received). Still, I don't see why TO would bring Kaberle back considering even without Gardiner they have JML, Gunner and so far Kostka to move the puck.

I don't think anyone would take Kaberle for free.

I'd still like to see him in Detroit. He might have his best chance in a puck possession system.

Again, after dumping Gomez and signing PK to that cap friendly deal, we aren't in cap hell next year. Why would we give up an asset to move Kabs when we can just wait for his contract to expire? Unless Montreal somehow gets a guy like Iginla, Perry or Clarkson this offseason we aren't going to need the cap-space.

Habs don't need a significant asset for him, but there is no reason to pay to get rid of him.

Played 6 games, 1 point, +2, 13min a game (2nd unit PP), has not been on for a goal against.

Problem is he is a 3rd pairing guy, who will get 35-45 points in a full season if you give him 1st unit PP time.

With Markov healthy Kaberle is useless to the Habs.

I think you can get a late pick for him now, but if you wait to the trade deadline, teams are going to want veteran puck moving D-men, and with a shorten season, going to have more buyers than sellers, so I think you can get something like the Wild got for Zidlicky(similar contract when traded, and was playing pretty bad when traded) last year, something around a 2nd round pck.

We can live without a 4th round pick

So? Why make a trade just to make one? Kabs isn't hurting us and his contract isn't hurting us.

Doesn't it just make sense for them to buy him out in off season?

Yes. He's also great to have around in case of injuries. We won't trade him at loss.

Wouldn't he count against the cap if we buy him out in the off-season? I thought we're allowed of 2 buyouts, one each off-season, and we already bought Gomez out.

Yeah there's this great new thing called the amnesty buyout. We have one remaining.

No, that's the one time the buyout wouldn't count against the cap.

I am pretty sure that Gomez's contract is still on our cap for this year. He was a first amnesty buy-out and the money he would have been paid next year will not be on our cap next year. Kaberle will be our 2nd amnesty buyout coming this summer and his salary for next year will count against the cap next year. After next years season, then whatever is remaining will not count against the cap. Finding a taker for Kaberle would allow us salary to obtain some reinforcements for a cup run this year or allow for a free agent pick-up this summer. If we are unable to trade him his salary will count against our cap next year.

Gomez is only on the cap this year because of the revision to allow the special pre-season buyout window. Kaberle won't count on the cap next year when the Habs exercise a compliance buyout on him.

It's not my $3M on the buyout, of course, but I wouldn't take any negative value deals for him. He can still play a bit. I'll take anything or give him away for free, but not give up negative value or hold onto cap/salary to move him.

Pretty sure history has shown that experienced defensemen have higher value in general in the NHL than on HF trade board. So me saying I'd take nothing for him, well, I also wouldn't be shocked if a real NHL team gave up a pick for him at some point. It's worth waiting until the deadline to see, anyway... not like it hurts the Habs any to wait for that.
