Shanahan: Best NHL disciplinarian?

With the videos he makes and explaining things in detail for one side or another I think he actually is quite good at his job. I was just watching NHL Live and he was explaining why he didn't give suspensions for the Landeskog hit and Fowler hit. I certainly changed my opinions on them. He has a tough job, but I actually think he does it quite well.

Thankless job, but yes, he's far and away the best they've had in that role. Glad he didn't say "to Hell with all this stress" after the beating he took last season.

Love how hands on he is. He's really good about explaining why they made the decision they did, even if its debatable. Even though I disagreed with the logic and the transpiring of events in the Fowler situation...

Well I like him more than Campbell.. I still don't get some of his decisions, but oh well.

Impossible job is impossible. When you factor in the severity of the hit, prior history, the severity of hits in the prior history, the question of intent vs. accidental, etc. there are too many variables to arrive at anything as formulaic as most people wish for. That said, I still love seeing the NHL photoshopped version of this show up:

You guys do realize he is just a figure head. Campbell is still at the wheel.

How people cannot see the inconsistency of suspensions being the consistent factor...

IMO the only difference between him and his predecessors is that he releases explanations and videos. It makes a huge difference though.

Maybe. But that's not saying much. He's made some questionable calls even when discussing players not named Fowler.

Ugh, so he's the best because he makes videos explaining his decisions?

He is still way too inconsistent on his calls. Too many obviously dangerous plays that go unpunished, too many suspensions that shouldn't have been, special treatment to star players... He's just as bad as Campbell IMO, except now he just throws suspensions all over instead. Quantity =/= quality.

Not because of videos but because of the explanations in the video. Before they would just say the length of suspension and thats it. Now they actually release reasons why and break down the play. Yes, inconsistent but it is impossible to be consistent in that job.

By far...
The videos minimize the transparency of his decisions.... he's clear about the factors that work towards the decisions he makes.

I haven't really watched any that i walked away from with doubts or scratching head with the exception of my reaction to the Raffie Torres getting 25 gms which seemed out of no where. But again, even with that one... the video made you at least understand the logic behind it despite the massive number at the end of it.
