I don't know why so many people are willing to get rid of Nielsen lol...dude is a bad ass player. Good offensive upside, good on D, top Pk unit, future selke winner once this team is half good. Is maybe the most underrated player in the league...why would we trade him? How much better could we really get in return? Lets not forget that he has 9 points in 12 games. Points are not easy to come by on this team.

I really don't want to lose Nielsen, he just has to be moved to the third line, that's all. Maybe with Strome this problem will be solved once and for all, we will see. With the rest I can live, especially Streit and Okposo are those kind of players that may have some value left but I really don't have the feeling that it will increase over the season, rather the opposite.

i would be shopping these players right now:
Nielsen
Grabner
Okposo
Aucoin
Reasoner
Boulton
Streit
Visnovsky
Finley
Nabokov

i would also listen to any offers for:
Niederreiter
Kabanov
Petrov

the islanders need to get bigger and stronger in all areas.

This video says it all. Keep JT and Hammer. If that is too much asked you can keep the following players too:

Grabner
Nielsen
Moulson
Ullstrom
Cizikas
Martin

Rest of the team would make a nice package. Lets start the rebuild now. Would be different than few years ago. Now we would have

a) Superstar
b) Young rock solid dman
c) Good 2way forward
d) Fastest man on the planet
e) Proven 30 goal scorer
f) Some young energy
g) Guy who gives 100% and can fight too

to build around. Trade the rest of the team to some quality players and call up the juniors.

PS. If this is too much take the As and C off from Johnnys, KOs and Marks jerseys. Then put the C on the #91. A's go to Martin and Hamonic. Simple as ****in that.

Trading Nielsen is one of the dumbest moves this team could make. What could we possibly get for him that would make it worth it? A late 1st rounder? Basically another Mayfield or Pokka. Add him to our already crowded prospect pool.

Is Cizikas or Sundstrom supposed to come in and instantly replace what Nielsen gives us? A top notch defensive forward who chips in 40+ points per year, is an elite PKer and one of the best shootout peformers in the league? Nielsen is out of place on the 2nd line, but that doesn't mean we should trade the guy.

If this team decides to actually become competitive they will need a guy like Nielsen centering their 3rd line.

The only players who we should even consider dealing are guys like Streit, Visnovsky, Reasoner, Aucoin and maybe even Nabokov(only if one of our BP goalies looks ready for NHL starting duties, otherwise I'd just hold him for the rest of the year barring some team offering a 1st). I wouldn't even look to dump Okposo, mainly because I doubt he has much of any value right now and I still think he has the talent to turn his slump around.

This team should show a little patience. Maybe dump off some of those veteran, soon-to-be UFAs at the deadline and stock up on trade chips for next offseason. Hopefully when that time comes, Wang/Snow will be ready to finally pull the trigger on unloading some of these picks/prospects and adding some salary. That's the only way this team will be able to change their losing ways.

They need a lot of pieces. First off you only have a handful of decent 5 on 5 wingers(Bailey, Martin, Grabner(kinda), and Ullstrom) Now that should tell you something right there about the woes of this team. I don't know what deals can be made but this is what I think:

Trade Okposo+ for a legit winger that can play 5 on 5 hockey. I'm tired of his perimeter ********. When was the last time we saw him take the puck to net or drive the net himself looking for a deflection. He is one player that plays with zero balls and it's time to get rid of him.

They also need a center. The more into the season it goes the more you see that Keith Aucoin is in way over his head and why he is an AHL mainstay. You don't need someone special to man the third line just a good solid player. Just someone that can play defensively and chip in here and there.

The D is fine, they need help. The top six wingers are extremely poor defensively and they need the right guys to play as a 5 man unit in the zone. You can't have Moulson and Boyes on the same line because they both lick unless they are near the net. It's a poorly constructed team. They need to take a page from Phoenix if they are going to be cheap.

I agree with this post pretty much completely. This team is not going to compete this season. We all should have known that from the start, even if they won a couple of games. So you play for next year. Right now, our team for next year is:

C: JT, Nielsen, Cizikas (maybe Strome and/or Nelson)
W: Moulson, Grabner, Bailey, Okposo, Martin, Ullstrom (maybe Nino)
D: AMac, Hamonic, Strait, Carkner (maybe Donovan)
G: DP unfortunately (maybe Poulin/Nilsson)

As you can see, there are holes everywhere, except maybe center but I would rather not count on a rookie.

Everyone not on that list can be moved by the deadline, hopefully for players who can step in next year, if not then prospects and picks.

Everyone on that list should only be moved if the Isles are getting back a better player.

To me it is simple, the Isles should be looking to make the playoffs next year. Make any trade that makes the team better (obviously excepting trades of key youngsters for soon to be UFAs). If the roster doesn't look better for next year, don't make the trade.

I don't want to lose Nielsen at all. but I wouldn't hesitate to include him in the right deal. He may be a good 3rd line center, but if he could be part of a fair package that would get this team a controllable #1 Dman or a 1st line winger, or even 2nd line center, it's something I'd definitely do.

Exactly. Thank you. I'm not suggesting that the Isles should absolutely just trade him away, but I wouldn't consider him untouchable at all.

Jesus, it's like people read things and see it all black and white.

Would you guys be open to going for Semin as a UFA in the summer? I think, realistically, he is the only one that could make an impact on JT's wing. He's a little soft, but what a play maker. JT won't have to do everything. Iginla would want to go to a contender..though, I would prefer Iginla over Semin.

If we can also get Getzlaf..wow..we would actually have a heavy hitting team...

Okposo to Minn for Cal Clutterbuck + 3rd. Didn't Cal play on a line with JT in juniors? At least he tries.

What about Brian Boyle? Do you think the Rangers would trade with us? We definetly need more size and toughness and he's fallen out of favor with Torts. How about KO for Boyle?

Shouldn't that go for pretty much everyone? There should be no untouchables (although JT comes close just because of how few players are at his level). If you can get a better player, anyone is available. I love Hamonic, but would move him in a second in a deal for a controllable #1 dman. Heck, for the right dman I would package Hamonic with Nielsen and more.

The problem is, there aren't too many of those trades available, and too many people on this board seem to want everyone gone (but JT) regardless of the return.

And might i add, he would be probably better than anyone else on the current roster to be the 1st line winger with JT

I'd do that but would Minny? Clutterbuck would give us some much needed grit and is among JTs best friends or so they say.

No, you look at the current roster and the pipeline and what kind of team you're trying to build and you decide who might be expendable down the line, and if you have an opportunity to get a quality player without giving up your keepers you should do it (not, as you said, "regardless of the return"). Hamonic should not be dealt b/c of his on-ice upside plus his personality and leadership. He's a keeper.

Frans Nielsen is a nice player, but with JT, Strome, Bailey, Cizikas, Sundstrom and Nelson, the C position is pretty deep. Bailey will probably be a wing. JT is #1. Strome and Nelson may battle it out for #2. Nelson/Cizikas/Sundstrom all look like potential 3rd line Cs. As others have said, Frans is small and soft and is not a prototypical 3rd line C. He's useful, but he's kind of a tweener.

Minny just recalled a 3rd goalie today. Any chance they are moving Harding? Would the Isles look for that and put DP on IR or in the Press Box - add Clutterbuck and send KO and Finley (Minny needs big D)?

I guess we just look at things differently. I look at our center depth and thing we have one proven top-line center, a third line center in Nielsen, a 4th line center in Cizikas and a bunch of unproven prospects. I don't consider that deep. I have a lot of hope for Strome and Nelson, but until they prove they belong I don't count them as depth.

And as for Hamonic, he is a good dman, but he isn't an elite dman. If you have a chance to improve, you have to take it. Yes, I would much rather keep him and move other players. But that isn't alwas an option. Somebody may look to shed salary and add depth and be willing to move an elite dman for a package including Hamonic (not likely, but possible). They probably won't take Brian Strait instead. If someone offers you a deal that you think makes the team better you have to take it.

What this team is really missing is swag. like, 09-10 Mike Green swag. We some trash talk and then back it up, this team needs balls! Confidence!

I see none of that here.

The only trades that can happen before the deadline are:
Visnovsky
Streit
Nabokov
Boyes

All are in final year of their deal and can all help a playoff team in some way (depth, PP specialist, etc)

Nobody here will bring a return that's going to make the NYI a better team next year. MAYBE Streit. But we got Ty Wishart for Dwayne Roloson so I'm not holding my breath.

I shudder to think what this Isles defense will look like next year without Streit and Visnovsky.

Okposo has a rising salary and declining play. Even Gomez at least had a declining salary! Does he have more market value than Tim Connolly? yup. How much more? Certainly NOT a top four defenseman.

Packaging players does NOT make the value go UP, it makes it go DOWN (for the most part). It's more salary and contracts and term that most teams don't want in-season.

Are you going to deal YOUTH? Nino? what can you expect back? Nobody wants Nino for THIS YEAR though so an in-season deal (like Turris for Runblad) may happen, but won't be earthshattering NOR make the NYI any better.

The acquisition of Thomas means ONLY ONE thing, that the Islanders can shed salary and still stay above the floor. I have NO IDEA how that can help this team get better.

I would even substitute Carkner for Finley if we could get Harding and Clutterbuck. We may have to throw something else in too.

I would agree. Carkner or Finley either way. Minny board is saying that their D is too small, so something along these lines, with a mid round pick added by the Isles might be equal value. Not sure either team would do this, and I don't see this as 'major' in any sense of the word, although it would improve the team IMO.

He may not be prototypical in the sense that he is a physical center, but he is very much a shutdown defensive C, perfect for a good teams checking line. There aren't many teams in the NHL where Frans wouldn't be their 3rd line center, going against the other teams top line every night. Unfortunately for us, he's our 2nd line center.
