Screwing with the Franson situation

I really like everything Nonis and Caryle have done so far except that they've kept Franson out of the line-up for Fraser,Holzer and now Komi..... I don't dislike Komi either it's just that Franson is a big right handed defenceman that we should be taking advantage of and is a huge mistake not playing him..... he needs to play some games.... I like kostka but would much rather have Phaneuf and Franson on the first pp on the points..... COME ON CARYLE you're going to regret it when he gets traded to another team and is a key piece of their backend!

Carlyle seems to be trying to turn Kostka into a Beauchemin type workhorse two way defender alongside a star number one. I have no idea where Franson will be rotated back in.

Once Kostka is proven, we be tradin Franson. Plenty of teams a crap on D. Look at Detroit.

I dont think Franson's been given a fair shake here yet. I just don't get why.

We need to make a trade that's forsure. We have way too many capable D. I know injuries happen but even if 3 guys were to go down at once we'd still have replacements.

With the emergence of Kostka, Komi playing well, and Fraser and Holzer capable if needed, maybe Franson is the odd-man out.

Well this season it's not his play but really where does he fit? No one has been playing bad enough for them to be replaced by Franson. Him and Komi seem to be fighting for that last spot but Komisarek playing well it's difficult to sit him in favour of Franson.

Me Neither. Phanuef, Franson, and Komisarek all play on the right side and Phanuef is cemented #1.

I missed the game last night what were the pairings?

Kostka-Phanuef
Liles-?
?-?

Komisarek, Gunnarson, and Gardiner where the others.

This is an interesting question, but he was used to dump Lombardi from Nashville, now 2 different coaches in Toronto.

Desjardins estimates that about 40% of the game is captured by Corsi analysis.

We complain now but watch when an injury happens, what if it was a defenseman that was out 6 weeks instead of Lupul then Franson would fill in. Depth is important why complain when you have it

Not that I have a preference to either but I don't get why a guy with more pedigree like Franson isn't getting much of a shake while they seem so insistent on giving Kostka
such premium ice time to sink or swim based on a five day training camp?

Outplay your competition or you'll be left in the dust

He's average offensively, slightly below average defensively and a carreer AHLer in Kostka has taken his potential job. He's not going to take a defensive role away from Gunnarson, Komisarek or Fraser.. not a better PMD than Phaneuf, Gardiner or Liles..

I like Franson a lot but he hasn't performed. You can argue he isn't being given a fair shake but Kostka came in and showed his mettle immediately.

Phaneuf actually plays the left side this season, and is much better at it since he's a left handed shot.

Phaneuf-Kostka
Gardiner-Liles
Gunnar-Komi

were last nights pairings.

He's caught in no mans land -- not tough enough for a big man (doesn't play meaner than Komi) and not quick enough (like Gardiner). But we do have a glut at the d position, great for when injuries hit.

I wouldn't mind sitting Gardiner/Gunnar a game to give Franson another try

Its weird that we even bothered to sign him to a 1 year tryout - if we weren't gonna try him out lol

Equally weird that Kostka is getting so much playng time - especially on the 1st PP unit.

Someone's gotta be being showcased for a trade

Its better on 5 on 5 for him to be in LD. Problem is on the PP, him on LD doesn't allow for D-to-D one timers unless there is better more positional movement and it slows the PP down. His one timer from the Kessel side is **** compared to his other side.

I hope Carlyle's love affair with Kostka doesn't turn into a Wilson-John Mitchell thing.

Gotta play Franson/Komi.

No he doesn't need to play anyone that doesn't deserve it.

Here's the best part ---> They do. After Franson's great game against MTL and Komisarek's two good games against MTL/PIT.

Here's the best part. Everyone on the roster is outplaying Franson. Just because you play good doesn't mean you are playing better than the rest of the D men.

Other than his pointshot, he is terrible defensively. He is completely oblivious in the D zone. It's not as if our D is lacking offensive skill. Carlyle is not going to sacrifice D awareness for O awareness. We have plenty of O awareness.
