The reality is he's the owner and the buck stops with him.
Who said it didn't?

I wasn't making excuses.

I was pointing out the mere fact that I don't know for certain what Pegula is thinking.

He could be thinking he hasn't seen enough of Regier and Ruff under his ownership to make a call.

Or, he could be thinking that they've done enough to remain employed.

You don't know what he's thinking and I don't know what he's thinking.

If I were the owner, I wouldn't have Regier and Ruff as my GM/head coach combo beyond the end of this season.

That's the problem. This ridiculous notion that Ruff gets a fresh start when Pegula took over. That's certainly his choice, he owns the team. But he deserves every criticism lobbed at him for it.

How do you know he made that notion? You're assuming it right? Unless you have an inside source with Pegula. How do you know right now he is not contemplating firing Ruff???

Sports teams are turned around, or at least put on the right track, all the time-especially in cap leagues. New Jersey went from not qualifying for playoffs to reaching the Stanley Cup Finals last year. Phoenix made a change with Dave Tippet and went from being a bottom dweller to reaching the playoffs the next three seasons he took over. Chicago went from not making the playoffs to winning the Cup two years later. On the flip side, LA is struggling after winning the Cup.

Are the Sabres really on the right track in a league in which over half of the teams make the playoffs each year, and the Sabres have missed the playoffs in 3 of the last 5 seasons, and the two times they made it was a first round exit? With the same GM and coach that have been here for 14 years?

It is actually amazing at times, in alot of sports, how a new coach with new ideas, and a different view of things, can turn a team round even with the same group of players.

Then he's just dumb because it was quite obvious when he took over that Ruff needed to go. Things have only deteriorated further since then and, yet, Lindy's still kicking.

Yes you're absolutely right, it is clear now that Ruff needs to go. I said if Pegula doesn't do anything after this season you're absolutely right that he's an awful owner, and I will agree with you. Can you blame him for trying to see if Ruff could do a competent job under his regime?

So we're almost all in agreement that Ruff needs to go. So why is Pegula untouchable to some? Regier needs to do it, but they're two peas in a pod and I don't think he will. That's when the owner steps in.

Because he brings so much to the table that no other owner either could or would be willing to in a market like Buffalo.

The fact that he might not make the moves people want at the pace they want doesn't take away from that. It just makes it frustrating.

Personally, if Pegula is going to be one end of the patient <-----> impatient scale, I'd prefer that he's overly patient.

Turning over coaches and/or GMs all the dang time is never a recipe for success.

Because some of us have lived through almost 15 years of unstable and generally crappy ownership, and we're happy to have an owner like Pegula who has money and passion to make the franchise better for years to come.

He's the owner of a hockey team. That's what matters. The other stuff is great, but ultimately, the product on the ice rules at the end of the day.

I think we all agree with that. No one wants Rigas or Golisano back. But all of his passion is irrelevant if he can't make the hard or correct decisions. Ruff should be fired immediately, but I can accept waiting until the end of this season.

Isn't Nashville kind of similar to Buffalo with their ownership and financial history? Also, they've made the playoffs the last 7 out of 8 seasons.

14 years is a lifetime in sports. It's beyond being patient.

Brian Burke stuck with Ron Wilson even though he was a terrible coach.

So glad both of them got canned..

IMO, Regier/Lindy have that kind of relationship that Burke/Wilson had. If Regier doesn't fire Lindy soon, he'll be going down with him just like Burke/Wilson did.

IMO Buffalo NY has been waiting for a franchise/Rome to be built for a very long time. How many years has the Sabres and Bills been in Buffalo? I take it a very long time. How many championships do each one have? I'll answer that 1. 0. I'm so sick of hearing about the Bills need continuity and the Sabres need time. He should have never said 3 years if it was going to take 10 yrs to get there. IMO if Ted Black was the right guy then he would have fired R n R already. And got some G.M. and coach in here by now who actually can get the job done.

This thread can be summed up so easily.

"I, random hockey fan, know more about how to run a business than a man who built a $4B enterprise from scratch. I know what I see on TV, and that makes me more qualified to know what to do than someone who spent months and months doing due diligence on the team and employees before he bought it, and spends more time in a day involved in the inner workings of the operation than I spend ever.

It's obvious to ME that something should have been done, therefore I am correct!!"
