There seems to be some under rating of Niskanen here. He will and should be back in the lineup over Bortuzzo at this point. I would prefer to see Bort and Engo rotate in and out of the lineup if all D are healthy. Roll with:

Nisky/Despres - Letang
Orpik - Martin
Despres/Nisky - Engel/Bort

I defiantly think he should be in the lineup, the real question is who plays with. Letang.

The Penguins will need to grab another top 4 d-man by the deadline if they want to go far into the playoffs.

About time someone focuses on what matters most in the playoffs.

personally, I'd keep Bort in the top-6 and designate Engo as the 7th. the former needs to be playing.
Agreed. Am actually surprised that more people haven't suggested this. Why does Bort automatically become the 7th guy?

If everyone keeps playing the way they do I don't see a reason to acquire a top 4 Dman at the deadline.

1) Dmen are very expensive to acquire
2) the Dman is very unlikely to be much (if at all) better than Niskanen or Despres.
3) We don't need a top 4 Dman because Niskanen and Despres are playing like legit top 4 Dmen.
And let's be realistic, no Dman can come to a team and automatically fix up the D. Good defense comes from team play.

Only way I can see Shero acquire a Dman is:
1) if he thinks the 2 rookies aren't ready for the playoffs.
2) We need a PP QB like Gonchar.

1st priority at deadline should be a top 6 LW, imo.

I agree but depending on what RS uses to acquire the LW, he may be in the market for 2 Top6 wingers. For example, if TK is used, Dupuis would be best playing with Sutter & Cooke while Shero tries to acquire a 2nd Top6 winger to replace Dupuis on Sid's line.

If we canjust unload Lovjoy, we'd be a set with the remaiing 7 D we currently have. We have a little bit of everyting on our current D set-up (minus Lovejoy, of course)

Do something with Lovejoy Waivers? trade?. Im keeping Bortuzzo,Despres and Boychuk up here, and for the time being not moving them.

Gonchar would be a nice add for the Cup run.

The Pens carried 8 D-man when they won the cup. Depth is what enabled them to go about their business even though injuries happened or someone needed a break/rest.

Depth! Lovejoy isn't depth, Tangradi isn't depth. They are a wasted roster spot if they can't come in and spell guys in the upper roles.

I doubt Shero's going to move Niskanen when he heals (shouldn't that be soon?), unless the return is significant. The Pens won't go into the playoffs with Bortuzzo and Despres in the lineup unless their play becomes way more consistent in the defensive end. One of them, or convceivably Engelland, will go back to sitting, unless Shero thinks another D (could be anyone) brings good value in return.

I agree and I think he can be acquired for a reasonable price if Ottawa falls out of it because he has a NTC and makes a lot of money so that limits the trade market for him somewhat. The only problem is I don't see where he fits. He and Letang really never played together because they both preferred the right side. He played a lot of his time here with Orpik but I don't want to break up the Orpik/Martin shutdown pair. Regardless Gonchar would at least help things on the PP.

Nailed it.

I'm new around here so I'm not entirely sure what you are saying.

Are you hinting there is a trade in the works or are you commenting on Nisky's trade value?

I'm playing Bortuzzo as the #6 and sitting Engelland.

Orpik - Martin
Despres - Letang
Niskanen - Bortuzzo
Engelland

Or, Nisky's return makes Despres bait . . . don't tell me that you wouldn't put that past Shero . . .

Trading Despres would be a mistake. He's young, has a ton of potential, and will be on a good contract for a while.

He's the perfect fit for what this team needs, too. He's fast, solid offensively, and has size that he isn't afraid to use. Adding Bortuzzo into the mix makes Niskanen expendable, and that isn't too say he doesn't deserve to be playing every night.

I never said that I would trade Despres. I was saying that I could see Shero doing it when Niskanen returns. Are you telling me that you couldn't see Shero doing that?

All this talk about our Dmen had me wondering...
Is there anyone out there still hating on Shero for that Zbynek Michalek trade last summer?

I didn't understand that hate to begin with. He was awful here. I also thought that Martin always looked better when he didn't have to play with Z.

Spot on. This says one thing to me: Speed. Music to HCDB's ears. Especially the last pair, that's one of the faster bottom pairs in the league.

It was smart to get rid of him. But weren't people more upset about the return than the fact they traded Michalek?
