Now at least I know where this dumb glove on the faceoff=penalty thing came from. McGeough was so preoccupied with the idea that a guy might win a faceoff with a glove that he hallucinated them while he was awake. And that was one of his least horrible practices.

Edit: Watch this whole video. Tim Peel looks like he just witnessed a traffic fatality and McGeough's yelling at the arena's timekeeper because "how dare the video crew show my botched call on the jumbotron." Because, you know, replays shouldn't be shown during a stoppage and that's totally the timekeeper's fault.
This is what I thought of immediately after reading this. Can't believe this moron is leading the charge.

No ****. Explains a lot. How could they possibly hire the guy to supervise other refs? Is that a union thing? Dear god. The fact that so many know him by name should tell you that he is unfit for the job. Every fanbase has been burned by McGeough at least once.

Just found this thread about his retirement.

Best part is, during the fan celebration over his pending retirement, McGeough puts Lidstrom in the box on a Rafalski high stick and the Red Wings get scored on because their best PKer is in the box on a botched call.

Yeah I figured that Stars-Oilers vid (see? Didn't even have to click "play", I knew what it would be ) would pop up.

A testament to Mr. Magoo's incompetence. Truly terrible call, and that's from a Stars fan.

And, as others have said, it definitely explains why reffing has been so.....off, this year.

I met Mick McGeough about a year ago, and I know one of his sons quite well. He is a good guy, and his son is hilarious.

But he was a terrible ref. I think he would be better in this role than he was on the ice, though.

You people don't get the point!

The Dilbert Principle is clearly at play here...

He'd have to be, wouldn't he? Not like anyone could get much worse at anything than McGeough was on-ice.

A pubescent atom-level ref would have been a more appropriate choice. At least he's read a rule book in the last ten years.

Maybe Mr. Magoo learned from all his mistakes and can teach others what not to do from experience. After all, Magoo has probably made EVERY wrong call in the book at least once.

Yeah, just the worst ref ever and they put him in charge. And surprise, surprise we have the worst reffing this year. What a joke.

It's not just that he was incompetent at reacting quickly enough but can think through the situation afterward in this role, he is incompetent at the whole job and is always so emphatic that he's right and has to be in the spotlight. WORST CHOICE EVER!

You're probably right.

It's surely not the Peter Principle as he had already reached his level of incompetency as a NHL ref.

Yeah, it was pointed out on the Oilers board that he was listed as supervisor of officials for the Kings - Oilers game a couple weeks ago, where it was nationally broadcast on TSN to a country of hockey fans saying WTF.

Apparently someone said it was his son not Mick himself.

And do not forget about Tom Kowal, same ref from the L.A game. And notoriously biased in favor of the flames.

Aw hell nah! Please tell me this is a joke. If not...

That said---it could be worse---it could be Ian Walsh.

Just when the game was beginning to gain some real traction, the NHL goes and does something like this...
