Re-sign him and enjoy his best years at a discount before letting him leave/trading him at the deadline as a pending UFA.
Pretty much. It shouldn't take much to re-sign him. If he improves on last year then you have a good all-around player on a bargain deal. If not, the contract will be easily movable to some team that thinks they might be able to turn him around.
Why would we ever do this? We have Spezza (who, if traded, will be returning an NHL ready centre I'd imagine), Turris, Smitty, Pageau, and Zib who are all natural centreman. We're already overloaded at the position. On top of this, we would trade from a position of weakness (d-men) for a 2nd/3rd line tweener. Wiercoch is worth the risk of holding on to... if he develops, we have a great 2nd fiddle offensive d-man to play behind Karl.
Personally, I am not a fan of Eller. The guy has great physical tools, but doesn't have a toolbox for those tools. It's evident in the fact that he can absolutely dominate for stretches for a game and after some other games, not even realized he was dressed for the game. His vision, offensive awareness, and overall hockey IQ make his offensive game streaky at best and leaves his ability to be a dependable in centre in question.
Habs are better off holding on to Eller than trading the guy, as he wouldn't fetch a ton. Might as well negotiate a cost effective contract so they can afford to pay that guy named PK cause he's becoming more expensive by the day
I think mtl can sign him for 4 year between 2 and 3 million avv so It good deal ... I wouldn't trade him , Eller is the reason why we get far in the playoff , at home desharnais line get some space since plekanec line is shutting down the opponent first line and Eller line is shutting down the opponent second line , so desharnais line is playing agains or the 3 line or 4 line !! Eller is perfect on our third line
The Habs would be brain dead if they traded Eller as he wouldn't give them anywhere near what his actual worth is. He has perhaps been their best forward in the playoffs - certainly if you consider his offensive and particularly defensive responsibilities. The guy is big, tough, strong, very good two-way player who can do pretty much everything well for you (he needs to get better at faceoffs, though).
A lot of his struggles go back to playing with absolutely awful linemates and having a coach who doesn't reward his great play with more opportunities on the PP despite the vast struggles of players like Desharnais and Plekanec.
One must pay a mighty price for a dance with perfection.
I'm thinking Ganger 1.72 mill retained, Gernat, next years 2nd then offer old yEller 4.13 mill for 4 years.. Bam Oilers get second line center who can swap down to third once Bennett/Draisaitl,Reindeer mature into the legends they were destined to become.
No. Not really. Those two 2nds basically equal a late first. Lauri Korpikoski(27yo) is older than Eller(25yo) but not old. He'll likely be cheaper, too. He's a top PKer, and should be good for 35-40pts if healthy, while being an excellent defensive forward. That's not completely far off from what Eller projects to be. It's just Lars plays a more valuable position and is younger. I'd say two 2nds at least comes close to making up the difference.
That said, if I'm Montreal, I'm looking to add picks to Eller to get an upgrade. Not acquire a downgrade with picks added. That I can completely understand. So from that perspective, my offer is a bad fit. It's not bad value though. On the value scale it's fine.
