Great point jack. Sweden was the winner, and they can claim to be as much. The best don't duck competition

He wasn't claiming. He was making a point that in the past conventional wisdom of assuming that a team that is definitely a major player are sub par. The post was not to belittle Canada or claim that Sweden was the best but to make a point that Sweden is a contender next year.

Indeed, it will be exciting hockey. It's always good to see non-Canadian perspectives in the Team Canada thread when they are well thought out and not just bluster.

people said nearly identical things about our world juniors this year as well....didn't turn out so well. In a single elimination type tournament anything can happen, esp with probably 6 teams with legit medal hopes. Something as simple as having a hot goaltender could easily tip the balance..However having said all that, Canada can put forth an incredibly talent laden squad and would almost undoubtedly be the favs with that crazy depth..

When one bad game can knock you out of medal contention and one good game can win it all, the answer is obvious. Yes.

Just look at how close the States came to winning it last year. In a seven game series, it's not close. With just one game to decide everything... it's anybody's to win.

Hockey is a random game. There is always a chance no matter how good a team is.

The WJC wasn't as good as one would think. The 2011-2013 draft classes have been weak, from a Canadian point of view.

With the centres and defensemen on the 2014 Olympic Team, the opposition won't be touching the puck too much.

Any goalie can get hot and stop any team...so I'd say other nations have a shot.

Single game elimination, so in answer to your question, yes. Could a bottom feeder NHL team beat the top in the league in one game? Certainly. The situations are relatively analogous.

A great team on paper means absolutely nothing when the puck drops. After watching Canada at the World Juniors this year you would think everyone would have realized that by now.

And Russia, USA and Sweden aren't exactly lacking in talent either.

Better than the following:

Doughty - Weber
Letang - Pietrangelo
Girardi - Staal
Seabrook - Keith

No way!

That is 8 all-stars.

And probably 5-6 of the top 10 defensemen in the NHL...Weber, Doughty, Letang, Pietrangelo, and Keith fall in this top-10 category. Make up your own personal mind about the rest.

Sweden's defense doesn't compare to Canada's.

No team can stop that one, ever even that American team that won a game against us and took the other to OT. But no we'll just steamroll through everyone like we did at the WJC.

Big ice + rising Swedish defensemen will still make them formidable. If Canada can lose to Martin Gerber, they can lose to anything.

I would take Canada's over Sweden's. Especially if Karlsson's can't make a full recovery by then.

If only this board would have an International Hockey section so this type of idiocy doesn't clog up the NHL board. Oh, wait.....

I have.

They don't have anything close to a Weber/Doughty/Letang/Pietrangelo/Keith set.

Karlsson is elite. But I would take no other Swedish defenseman ahead of who I listed.

Oh yeah. Karlsson not being able to recover would be a nasty blow to Sweden. (well for any country)

They would still have solid D but they would lose a lot on the offensive side of the game and one of the best QB's in PP.

Hopefully he will come together by that. I guess without complications he should be back by then.
